Exclusive: West Virginia Water Crisis: Evacuations, 'Water Should Not Be USED'

West Virginia officials need to provide residents with contingencies for long-term and adequate water delivery or evacuations should be established, an expert told Deborah Dupré near Ground Zero this weekend, Day 9 of the poisoned water crisis.

“Contingencies for long-term water delivery or evacuation should be established,” organic chemist Dr. Yuri Gorby stated in an email to Before It’s News reporter Dupré, after his interview with her Saturday on the worsening West Virginia water crisis.

Gorby is the Howard A. Blitman Chair at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

Last week, Gorby wa in West Virginia, meeting and planning with local community leaders and sceintists negatively impacted by a what has been a high-risk environment of the state even before the mega-chemical leak at Freedom Industries on Jan. 9. The leak of “Crude MCHM” resulted in a state of emergency and a nine-county water ban, a ban Gorby thinks officials should have been kept.

‘Water Shoud Not Be Used’

“This water is not safe, far from it,” a resident at Ground Xero emailed Dupré on Monday, one of a growing number of locals describing painful injuries allegedly from tainted water in their homes. Using clothes and even wash cloths cleaned in a flushed system is still leading to pain, they say.

“My wife used a wash cloth that was washed in the water that was flushed 5 times, and it has burned my sons face and eyes,” the emailer said.

The mystery chemical, not necessarily MCHM, the one blamed by officials, is sticking to the insides of pipes with particles. Even in small amounts that the water picks up as it runs, the poison is continuing to cause pain and suffering. Yet officials are saying it is safe and have lifted the water ban in all but one county.

“What are they [doing] saying it’s safe?” the emailer asked.

“Who are these [people] making decisions in the complete absence of data that are needed to make such decisions?,” Gorby asked.

Calling the West Virgnia water crisis the ”Freedom Industries fiasco” last week, New Orleans-based environmental attorney Stuart Smith said in his blog last week that it “ spotlights a couple of things about environmental protection — or maybe our lack of environmental protection — in this country.

“For one thing, while many citizens tend to focus on Washington and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the reality is that most potentially hazardous activities are regulated at the state and not the federal level.

“And most statehouses in this country are political cesspools, where big businesses and their hired lobbyists hold an inordinate amount of sway.”

The political cesspool is now burning and causing more suffering from an aray of poison symptoms, including neurological disorders – and leaving the suffering West Virgnians with little humanitarian aid.

A major problem has existed with the government emergency response water distribution since the crisis began twelve days ago: Not enough has been delivered for both drinking and safe hygiene – enough for safe bathing or washing dishes and clothes.

Poisoning from touching and even being near and breathing the tainted water and water fixtures is widespread across the nine counties, according to reports to Before It’s News.

Many suffering West Virginians are basically stuck in a sea of confusion and suffering.

Organic chemist Yuri Gorby has over 20 years as a laboratory researcher and bioprocess engineer under his belt. He developed controlled cultivation laboratories at The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the J. Craig Venter Institute in San Diego, CA. Dr. Gorby has pioneered ‘electromicrobiology’; has organized numerous workshops and symposia dedicated to controlled cultivation as an important component of “systems microbiology” research.

He’s been an adjunct professor at Washington State University, graduate student advisor, team-teaching courses in environmental microbiology and microbial physiology. He’s also a Guest lecturer in Geobiology and Microbial Physiology at the University of Southern California and has directed a team of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from USC, CalTech and the University of Southern California.

On Saturday, Gorby told Before It’s News on Skpe that West Virginians injured the most are the very ones who can affect the most change. If they abandon their homes, all is lost. They need to stay and help lead the fight, he solemnly said, looking the other way, as though to hide tears.

The organic chemist with a big heart has been working to help resolve the West Virginia battle against Big Energy for years. He’s seen the spirit and resiliency of people of the hollers, where fracking has tainted water and air since the boom began, and even before that, where mountain top removal for coal has ruined lives.

Between Saturday and Sunday night, however, Gorby’s sentiments about resisting had changed. He’d just been on the phone, speaking with too many people describing serious neurological problems that coincided with their experiences in the middle of the water crisis. Some of those people were the very ones with whom he’d been meeting last week.

“In the absence of knowledge about the various types, concentrations and toxicity of chemicals that may be present in these systems, we should avoid further action and release of these materials into the environment,” Gorby said Sunday.

“In my opinion, they should operate under the premise that the public water distribution system is shot and should not be used.”

Let’s hope people listen to the wisdom of this good man, who knows what he’s talking about.

They target that area because of all the smart people there that already crack the code and killing off the ones they don’t need.

    • INSIGNIA777

I fear that this incident is already following the same path as the BP Gulf oil and Fukushima fiascos, with the media holding a lid down while protecting those responsible.

When the political money machine moves it’s ugly hand, the corporate media stands still and obeys it’s orders.

      • Deborah Dupre

Agreed! Seems to be following the same blueprint. Knowing this is even more frightening for the human victims.

i can’t get past the idea, possibility, this is not an accident. just because ”corporations” make money and that’s their only objective, doesn’t mean they intentionally or haphazardly put peoples lives in danger through negligence! the best way to ruin you business is to kill people with your product!! I’m sorry, i know y’all hate republicans and like to hug trees, i get that but to think that greed and love of money means that everything they do is evil, is ludicrous! to think that they or anyone would slough off safety inspections for the bottom line is insane. eff off an inspection, not make improvements, well that’ll make your bottom line ZERO and no corporation is trying to get to zero. I’m definitely concerned about this, the sinkhole, the fertilizer and feed factories exploding but to attribute all of this to corporate greed is stupid. will you apologize to texas brine and the koch brothers when you find out it was sabotage? yeah, probably not. anyway, what IF it is something sinister? from outside the corp? that’s the way i lean. the one thing i can’t figure out is the places ”they” do it. why not a big city big state, national emergency type thing? i don’t know. what i do know is, this contamination did not occur because the owners are republican. always scapegoats, always blame, no accountability. everyone enjoys rewards no one suffers repercussions, other than us! lastly, why is this still going on and how long can free flowing chemicals ”hang on” and why didn’t we use this stuff in vietnam?

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you, Morris. No – not Republicans or Democrats. They’re both bought by these very guys – Koch brothers, who stop at nothing for their corporate aim.

They are both responsible for privatization and deregulation – the 2 keys that allowed this to happen.

        1) The water co. there is privatized.
        2) Deregulation is so serious, that facility had not been checked in 23 years. If anyone did want to make a bundle, say from fracking illegally – this was/is a perfect pasture.

These are the same 2 corporatism issues we saw allow the Gulf, Bayou Corne and Fukushima humanitarian disasters/catastrophes.

Obviously, human cost in producing any of the non-renewable energies is a non-issue to corporatism.

What has gone on in WV is a problem that is facing the entire nation. Nearly 1 in 10 Americans live with-in 10 miles of a contaminated military site. 1,000s of chemicals are unregulated meaning they are not even included in the water testing criteria.

The public is misled because they believe that since their water has been tested, be it a private well or a municipal system, contaminants that are of most concern may not even be included in the testing battery.

US water testing standards are st best sub-standard.
