Magnesium supplementation may prevent bone fractures, study reveals

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

(NaturalHealth365) Bone fracture due to osteoporosis is a leading cause of disability in the aging population. Naturally, as you know, calcium and vitamin D tend to play a crucial role in maintaining bone health as we age. However, the role and health benefits of magnesium supplementation could be essential to bone health as well, according to researchers.

Scientists have known for some time that magnesium is an essential nutrient and component of bone health; however, until this current research, no study has demonstrated its effect on reducing the risk of bone fracture. Now the Universities of Bristol and Eastern Finland have found that this mineral could be the key to preventing disability in older persons related to the loss of bone health and integrity.

Direct correlation between benefits of magnesium supplements and reduced bone fracture risk

For the study, 2,245 middle aged men were followed over a 20-year period. It was determined that those who had lower magnesium blood levels had a higher risk of bone fracture, particularly hip fractures.

However, bone fracture risk was reduced by as much as 44 percent in those with higher amounts of magnesium in their blood. Of the 22 men with the highest magnesium blood levels (> 2.3 mg/dl), none of them experienced a fracture during the 20 year study period.

Interestingly, the ideal way to consume magnesium was found not to be through food intake. Instead, maintaining optimal magnesium blood levels was best accomplished through taking magnesium supplements, say researchers. This was especially true for individuals who were on certain medications or experiencing a bowel disorder.
And, let’s not forget the obvious, treating underlying disorders – which stand in the way of achieving ideal magnesium levels – could also be helpful for those at risk.

Benefits of magnesium for bone health on par with calcium, vitamin D and regular exercise

Unfortunately, the symptoms and risk factors for bone health problems have been difficult to detect in the past. In addition, conventionally-trained physicians do not tend to monitor magnesium levels. But, in light of these new findings, blood magnesium screening could be added to standard blood panel testing to help identify the individuals who are most at risk for bone fracture and bone health issues.

Vitamin D – K2 supplementation are already utilized to help support bone health. And, of course, eating foods that naturally balanced with a variety of healthy minerals like, calcium can be beneficial as well. Recent research has also indicated that dried plums can contribute to better bone health as people age. In terms of non-food, smart choices: staying active and doing resistance training as part of an exercise routine will help keep your body strong and healthy.

These recent findings are particularly compelling for all of us – especially as we age. With bone health issues like osteoporosis and bone fractures being all too common – it’s up to each and every one of us to take a more proactive approach to our individual healthcare needs.

Watch your magnesium levels and take steps to ensure that blood serum levels are always kept within the optimal range. If you currently have a serious health issue – be sure to work with a qualified healthcare professional to guide you through the process.
