It cant use your home internet without permission, nor broadcast out of its location if you do something about it nor if you refuse to install an app which uses it on a connected device can it contact home. This will mean panicked utilities demanding to have access to their product to read the meter defeating the objective of remote monitoring, leading to estimated bills far in excess of usage as punishment. They do have the right to collect the meter reading for the quarter what they dont have the right to is to alter the meter or any box or device you have which has stopped the smart functionality. If you dont use the thing or let it contact home its pretty much useless.
