Superfood - Blueberries

Blueberries are harvested from a perennial flowering plant native to North America and belong to the same genus as cranberries and huckleberries (Vaccinium).

Benefits – Blueberries have a unique dark blue/purple color when ripe and that color comes from anthocyanins, which are excellent antioxidants. In fact blueberries are one of nature’s top antioxidant foods. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause cell damage, detoxify the body and even destroy bacteria and viruses.

Blueberries have other anti-aging properties as well. Telomeres are like a protective coating on the end of chromosomes that safeguard genetic information during DNA replication. The breakdown of telomeres over time has been linked to age-related breakdown of cells. Blueberries contain the antioxidant Pterostilbene, which plays a role in a bodily process that helps maintain the length of telomeres. Pterostilbene also allows your body to regulate the production of energy while lowering fat and blood sugar levels and reducing body fat stores and chronic inflammation.

Other antioxidants in blueberries are strong neuroprotectants that can boost cognition, memory and concentration, mitigate neurodegeneration and even slow the development of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The health benefits of blueberries are so numerous we can’t even list them all but other benefits include reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fighting cancer and cardiovascular disease, supporting bone and eye health, aiding digestion, boosting the immune system and oh yeah can even increasing one’s lifespan.

Blueberries are among the fruits that have the lowest amount of carbohydrates per serving.

Ways to enjoy – Blueberries have a sweet taste with varying levels of acidity. Try adding clean organic blueberries to yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal or salad.
