10 Tips for Better Sleep

Improving your sleep quality can improve your overall health. Those who are well-rested tend to be more cognitively sharp and are sometimes less susceptible to illnesses. Those who don’t sleep well complain of daytime sleepiness and even headaches. Read on for tips on improving the length and quality of your sleep.

10. Decrease Screen Time
Staring at your phone or computer screen all day can make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Reduce your screen time during the day. Stay off your phone and computer for about one hour before bedtime.

9. Create a Comfortable Environment
Some people make the mistake of working in bed or bringing their work home to do while they lounge in bed. If you must bring your work home, leave it on your desk away from the place where you sleep. This makes it easier to cut off your working brain and relax at bedtime.

8. Choose Comfy Clothes
Some people have a hard time sleeping in certain fabrics. Find sleeping clothes that are comfortable for you. This will make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

7. Invest in Good Bedding
Sheets with a high thread count and a comfortable blanket are ideal. Choose what works for you. A comfy bed is both inviting and sleep inducing.

6. Consider a New Mattress
Everyone has different needs when it comes to a mattress. Some prefer a firm one. Others prefer softer mattresses. Whatever your needs, make sure you get a new mattress every 10 years or so. You’ll be surprised how well you sleep when your bed is comfortable.

5. Cut out Caffeine
To feel less keyed-up, drink less caffeine throughout the day. Do not have any caffeine in the evening or at night, especially if you are someone who is easily energized by caffeine.

4. Perform the Same Nightly Ritual
Take a relaxing bath, brush your teeth and put on your pajamas at the same time every night. This coaxes your body into responding to the same routine.

3. Exercise During the Day
Exercise causes a rise in body temperature, and once that temperature comes down, you feel ready to recharge. Once you exercise and fall asleep, you’re more likely to stay asleep and to wake up rejuvenated.

2. Don’t Nap During the Day
Oftentimes your most satisfying sleep will come from nighttime sleeping. In order to sleep more at night, try not to nap during daytime hours.

1. Stick to a Regular Bedtime
Some people struggle to sleep because they go to bed at different times each night. This puts off their sleep/wake cycle. For a better quality of sleep, go to bed around the same time every night.

Try the aforementioned tips to improve your sleep quality. Well-rested minds and bodies perform better. The added energy from improved sleep will hopefully help you accomplish more during the day.
