‘We thought they would let us in. But Trump sent the military instead of social workers…’

Central American migrants, in two groups, marched toward the American Consulate in Tijuana with a list of demands on Tuesday.

They told the U.S. government—President Donald Trump in particular—to promptly process their asylum claims, to stop denying their applications, to cease deportations of illegal aliens, and to either let every caravan migrant into America or give them $50,000 to return to their native country, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

As thousands of migrants wait at the U.S.–Mexico border, living in poor conditions of their own making, they are demanding help from America to which they have no right.

Although more than 6,000 migrants initially came to the border seeking asylum, their presence has diminished, in part due to Trump’s bold, unrelenting stance against their entrance into the country.

The Union-Tribune reports that 700 migrants have returned to the country from which they set out. Additionally, U.S. immigration authorities have deported 300, and 2,500 have submitted applications in Mexico for asylum in the U.S.—per Trump’s policy to keep asylum applicants from first crossing the border, which would entitle them to a lengthy and expensive interview process.

The other 3,500 unaccounted caravan migrants have either crossed illegally into America or relocated to other border cities in Mexico.

One group of 100 caravan migrants arrived at the American border at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

They demanded reparations for America’s intervention in Mexico, according to the group’s organizer, Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa, a Honduran.

“It may seem like a lot of money to you,” Ulloa said. “But it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras.”

They also demanded that the U.S. speed up asylum entrance into the country from its current rate, between 40 and 100 migrants per day at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, to 300 per day.

Migrants said they expected entrance into America to be easier than it was.

“A lot of people are leaving because there is no solution here,” said Douglas Matute, 38, of Tijuana. “We thought they would let us in. But Trump sent the military instead of social workers.”
