Mexico City: He Survived the Plaza Garibaldi 'Mariachi Attack--Then Executed outside his home

On Tuesday night, a 35-years-old man, identified as Daniel “N”, was shot dead by two armed perpetrators outside of his home. The incident took place in Calle Darío Garza of the Colonia Revolución, in the Venustiano Carranza delegation, located about 3 kilometers northeast of the Zócalo. Daniel “N” was one of the survivors of September’s attack in Plaza Garibaldi. This assault, which had caused significant media attention, left six people dead and several wounded, including Daniel “N”. His execution came just a week after he was released from hospital (he is said to had been still in a wheelchair at the time of his killing). Reportedly, Daniel “N” accompanied by another man arrived in front of his home when being approached by two armed men, disembarking a car. The two men shot him several times, while Daniel’s companion managed to flee.

Oaxaqueño Analysis:

Reportedly, Daniel “N” was a member of La Anti-Unión Tepito. This appears reasonable, as the criminal group was already the target in the attack on the 14th of September in Plaza Garibaldi. The attack back then was planned/conducted by members of La Unión Tepito, namely among others, Víctor Hugo Ávila, “El Huguito”. Thus, it can be assumed that members of La Unión Tepito are also behind the latest killing of Daniel “N”. It might be coincidence, but some hours earlier to the execution of Daniel “N”, on Tuesday afternoon, a member of La Unión Tepito, who is highly likely affiliated to “El Huguito”, was shot and wounded. So, the execution of Daniel “N” might have happened in retaliation for this assault. Having said that, it could also be that La Unión Tepito have anyway planned to finish Daniel “N” off after his release from the hospital after they failed to kill him on the 14th of September.

In general, the center of Mexico City has been scene of an increased number of violent incidents in recent time. This is mainly owed to the above-mentioned dispute between La Unión Tepito and La Anti-Unión Tepito, but also due to the emergence of another criminal group called Cartel Nueva Generación Tepito. The rupture of Mexico City’s criminal underworld was triggered by several events, including the recent arrests of the La Unión Tepito leaders “El Betito” and “El Pistache”, who were arrested in August and October, respectively, this year. Purportedly, Hugo Pérez Díaz “El Güero Loco”, who is leading the Cartel Nueva Generación Tepito has revealed information to authorities which led to the arrest of both “El Betito” and “El Pistache”. “El Güero Loco”, who presumably maintains connections to CJNG, was a drug and weapons supplier for La Unión Tepito so it appears plausible that he has had the necessary insights to tip them off. For quite a while, CJNG has attempted to gain ground in Mexico City’s center as well as other parts of the capital.

It seems that the apparent reorganizations (consequently to the high-ranking arrests), the shift of alliances, as well as the current potential to gain influence/ground, is adding to the ongoing ruptures in Mexico City’s criminal underworld. Against this background, a continuation of higher than usual numbers of tit-for-that killings (and violence in general) between the three criminal groups can be expected until one of them is able to significantly consolidate control or a truce is made.
