Miguel Ángel Caro Quintero completed his sentence in the United States and was deported to Mexico through the Tijuana El Chaparral port of entry border crossing (Puerto Fronterizo El Chaparral), without being prevented from traveling freely.
Sources from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) informed ZETA that the deportation occurred last Friday, and that upon entering Mexican soil, Caro was received by his family.
The freedom of Miguel Ángel, brother of Rafael Caro Quintero, former leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, took place after serving a sentence of 17 years in the maximum-security prison of ADX Florence, in Colorado, where. drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was transferred last week.
Miguel Caro, 56, who led from the city of Caborca, the so-called Sonora Cartel, was jailed after being found responsible for the charges of organized crime in Colorado and conspiracy to traffic marijuana in Arizona.
The Sinaloan was captured in December 2001 in the city of Los Mochis [Sinaloa] by federal investigation agents in compliance with a provisional detention order for extradition purposes issued by the First District Court of Federal Criminal Proceedings in Mexico City.
Caro Quintero was driving a gray 2000 model Chevrolet truck and at the time of his capture,he was found with a Super 38 caliber pistol. He was accompanied by a subject named Elieder N.
The then Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) reported that the antecedents of the processes followed in the United States for the District of Arizona indicated that from 1982 to 1986, Miguel Caro together with his brother Rafael and 27 members of the organization, exported marijuana and cocaine for a subject named Michael Hooks, in North American territory.
The drug was stored and later sold to traffickers throughout the United States, using clandestine flight systems and land transportation. Undercover agents of the DEA negotiated with Miguel, in order to establish various clandestine airstrips in the United States.
After spending time in the Altiplano maximum security prison, Miguel Ángel Caro Quintero was transferred to Cefereso 3 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, where he was extradited to the United States on February 25, 2009.
The Mexican pleaded guilty to the charges and collaborated with the US authorities to impose a reduced sentence of 17 years for a Federal Court in Denver, Colorado.
To date, his brother Rafael Caro Quintero is a fugitive after he was released due to a judicial error on August 9, 2013 in the trial of the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena Salazar and Mexican pilot Alfredo Zavala Avelar, for which he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
In the case of Miguel Ángel, it was confirmed that he left the super security prison ADX Florence, known as the “Alcatraz de las Rocosas”, where Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, Javier Arellano Félix and now Joaquín Guzmán Loera are also imprisoned.
The whereabouts of Miguel Caro is unknown after his internment in the country.
