Action: Support the FIRST STEP Act sentencing reform bill.

The FIRST STEP Act has already passed the House. The Senate version has even better provisions. And even President Trump has endorsed this bill. So now…

We need to push the Senate version over the top. Then make sure the (House-Senate) Conference Committee retains all the best reforms. This bill…

• Bans the shackling of pregnant inmates
• Increases the “good time” inmates can earn toward shorter sentences
• Expands the compassionate release program for terminal prisoners
• Eliminates mandatory life sentences for drug offenses
• Reduces the “stacking” of firearm penalties for certain crimes
• Expands the so-called “safety valve” to give judges more sentencing discretion
• Retroactively applies the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010’s penalty reductions to crack-cocaine offenders sentenced before the law was passed

That last measure helps correct the 100:1 sentencing disparity between powder and crack cocaine offenses.

In a rare case of almost all sides being on the same side of an issue, the bill has also been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, the National District Attorney’s Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
