CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Word of eight bottlenose dolphins found dead on different parts of the South Carolina coast line in the past nine days traveled quickly from the shore to Bert’s Market on Folly Beach.

“My early birds come in and get a cup of free coffee and stand around and talk about the condition of the beach,” said Eric Rowland, a Bert’s Market employee.” Everybody that came in and saw the porpoises were concerned.”

Pinpointing what may have killed the eight dolphins is a daunting task.

“You can speculate a lot of different possibilities from disease to entanglements,” said Shelley Dearhart, an educator at the South Carolina Aquarium. “I think the cold water has affected a lot of animals out in the ocean, whether it’s sea stars or fish .

We’ve had a lot of accounts of animals washing up and of course there’s speculation that the cold water could be why.”

As experts try to determine what may have killed these dolphins, according to Dearhart this could be a sign of a deeper problem.

“I think dolphins are a species that can indicate the health of our ocean, and as much as we rely on that resource then we do need to pay attention to animals that are being affected out there,” said Dearhart.

The National Ocean Service’s will conduct autopsies on the dolphins.

In an average year, about 40 dolphins are found stranded on South Carolina beaches.
