Dead Whale Shark found in Camarines Sur, Philippines

CAMARINES SUR – Fishermen found a dead whale shark or “butanding” in Cabusao, Camarines Sur on Thursday.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) later confirmed the whale shark was the same one that was rescued from being beached in Calabanga.
The butanding was a male, around 7.7 meters long, weighing about 6 tons.
The BFAR said the cause of death could have been the lack of oxygen in the waters coming from the Bicol River Basin.
However, the animal did have wounds on the right side of its body, possibly from hitting the propeller of a boat.
This is the 7th incident involving whale sharks in Bicol, but this is the first where the butanding actually died.

Atlanta—AP.Local authorities have identified the dead Whale Shark as Fred “Spots” Johnson, a whale Shark who was reported missing from the Georgia Seaquarium last month.
State and local Wildlife officers who have been engaged in the investigation of the disappearance of Johnson have offered no explanation of how he came to be found dead in the Philippines, half a world away from his home in Atlanta.
Confidential sources close to the investigation have revealed that Johnson was despondent over his incarceraton at the Georgia Seaquarium and had recently confided to friends of his intent to abscond from the aquarium at the earliest opportunity.
Those same sources have indicated that authorities are stumped at how a mammal as large as Johnson managed to quietly escape from the tank without leaving any evidence as to the mode or method.
Seaquarium Curator Marilyn DeBanes expressed shock at the discovery, “We were appalled to find Fred missing and even more hurt to find he wasn’t comfortable living here in the Seaquarium.” she told reporter Mookie Bonging, “We thought he was happy, he hadn’t told us he had become homesick—I’m just shocked to hear of his demise.”
Authorities have stated that no stone will be left unturned in this investigation and promise to solve this strange case before visiting Dunkin Donuts.
