Another day, another dead whale, humpback this time Bar Harbor, Maine

BAR HARBOR — Another day, another dead whale, or so it’s starting to seem.

A 40-foot, female humpback was spotted floating in the water between the Duck Islands and Mount Desert Rock last week. It was the third dead whale that Allied Whale, the marine mammal research group at College of the Atlantic, has dealt with in the past two months.

While that is more than there have been in recent years, it really isn’t surprising, according to Allied Whale stranding coordinator Rosemary Seton.

“It’s par for the course in any given season to have critters dying for one reason or another,” she said. “And with the awesome weather we’ve had this August, there are more people out boating and on the beaches, so there are likely to be more sightings.”
