Siraj Wahhaj and the New Mexico Compound Story

*Note: Authorities in New Mexico report that they have just discovered the remains of a boy at the compound in New Mexico.

The discovery of 11 children found living in squalid conditions in the New Mexico desert Friday had shocked the nation. As a result, 5 adults are being charged with child abuse. I noted with interest that one of the adults is named Siraj Wahhaj, the same name as a controversial Brooklyn-based imam. Sure enough, the man arrested is the son of the imam. In addition, two of his daughters are among the arrested.

To be sure, there is as yet no indication that the elder Wahhaj has any connection to the New Mexico story other than his family members. He has enough baggage to deal with given his status as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center case. In addition, he has a number of controversial statements on the record including calling for Islam to take over the US and calling our country, a “filthy garbage can”. In spite of those credentials, CAIR’s Southern California director, Hussam Ayloush (another controversial character in his own right), told me directly at a 2013  event in Riverside that Wahhaj was “one of the most prominent and respected religious leaders in America” and that I was a bigot for bringing it up in my question. No doubt CAIR will continue to invite Wahhaj to speak at their events as will other groups like the Islamic Society of North America. Linda Sarsour calls him her “mentor, who taught her to speak truth to power”. They will all continue to regard him as one of the “most respected religious leaders in America”. Maybe the respected imam was thinking of that filthy compound in New Mexico when he called America “a filthy garbage can”. We, however, know the truth about Wahhaj. As the old saying goes, “Garbage in-garbage out.”
