ChiComs Ban Christmas

No wonder liberals admire the ChiComs. Over there, the ruling class doesn’t have to exert subtle pressure over the course of a generation to make us feel like we are transgressing if we say “Merry Christmas.” They can just ban Christmas outright:

At least four Chinese cities and one county have ordered restrictions on Christmas celebrations this year, according to official notices and interviews. Students, teachers and parents from 10 schools around China told The Associated Press that Christmas celebrations have been curtailed.

Dictator for Life Xi Jinping “is trying to broaden the appeal of the Communist Party by casting it as a crusader for Chinese tradition in a fast-changing world.” So Christmas has to go.

Ironically, leftists in the West suppress Christmas for a diametrically opposite reason. They want Christmas abolished because it is an important aspect of a traditional culture that they want to eradicate to clear the slate for the utopia they dream of imposing.

But ChiComs and Western liberals are on the same page when it comes to the other major reason to repress Christmas. Neither of them can abide Christianity. Progressives must wish they could crack down on Christian churches like the ChiComs have been doing lately.

This would make the Grinch wring his hands and snicker with glee:

Shop windows were to be stripped of Christmas stickers and streets kept free of Christmas banners and lights. Law enforcement patrols were to be stepped up Dec. 23-25 to prevent illegal signs of celebration.

However, the Christmas spirit has taken root. Even under the communist boot, it grows.

Liu Kaiming, president of the Institute of Contemporary Observation, a civil society group in the city of Shenzhen, said that despite the drumbeat of official discontent, Christmas cheer continues to spread in China.

According to Liu,

“Young people’s enthusiasm for the festival is ever-increasing.”

If Chinese under communist rule can keep Christmas alive, the least we can do is not let ourselves be bullied into saying “Happy Holidays” as if Christmas were a dirty word.
