Outlook

Low pressure will continue to pull away from the southeast tonight, allowing dry high pressure to finally spread back over the region this weekend and linger into early next week.

Weather Hazards

The forecast has called for an inch or two at elevations above 3500 feet, so be careful if you plan to pass through or journey to locations at or above this altitude. Be cautious on area roadways. We are also under a wind advisory, also mostly for elevations above 3500 feet. Scattered power outages may result. A copy of the wind advisory has been posted below.

…VERY WINDY CONDITIONS TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS LATE TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY…

.A low-pressure system lifting northeast across the southern and central Appalachians will bring a trailing cold front through the mountains tonight. Northwest winds will come up sharply behind the front and produce very gusty conditions during the early morning hours and then through the day on Saturday.

…WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST SATURDAY ABOVE 3500 FEET…

* LOCATIONS…Elevations above 3500 feet in the southern mountains of western North Carolina.

* HAZARDS…Very windy conditions.

* TIMING…Developing after midnight, strengthening through daybreak and then persisting into the afternoon hours on Saturday.

* WINDS…Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 45 to 50 mph.

* IMPACTS…Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 35 mph, or gusts of 46 to 57 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Clear, with lows in the upper 30s. Winds out of the northwest 15 to 20 mph, gradually diminishing to 5 to 10 mph by dawn. Gusts will also gradually diminish, beginning at 30 mph after sunset and ending up around 15 or 20 mph by sunrise.

Sunny, with a high near 60. Winds out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning, shifting through the west in the late morning hours, then coming out of the southwest in the afternoon.
