Chicago Police Could Charge Jussie Smollett for Hate Hoax

Could there be justice in the Jussie Smollett case, even in single-party Democrat-ruled Chicago? I doubt it, but maybe:

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters that if police suspect the report of a racially motivated attack on “Empire” star Jussie Smollett is a hoax, he will be held accountable.

It’s a hoax all right, with about 95% certainty. It has all the clichéd hallmarks, and a city bristling with surveillance cameras has not been able to corroborate Smollett’s improbable and self-serving tale of racist and homophobic oppression. But we can’t add Jussie to the Hate Hoax List until we have proof or a confession, and neither will come without a serious investigation of the incident — not as a hate crime but as a hate hoax.

Johnson said that police have no reason to suspect that Smollett invented the attack or exaggerated his account of it, but the possibility of a hoax could lead to criminal consequences for the television star.

No reason? Have they not noticed how the media has predictably hyped his career over this? This hoax is worth $millions to him, in addition to advancing an ideology that no doubt has been very very good to him.

Criminal consequences for the star of this overpromoted production could spell an end to the epidemic of hate hoaxes we have seen over the past few years. But unless he is actually charged, the case will just fade away, leaving a vague impression in most people’s mind that Smollett really was set upon by racist homophobes who put a noose on him, poured bleach on him, et cetera.
