EU Tightens Article 13 Garrote Around Internet’s Neck

Intent on destroying the Internet as a platform for free expression, the authoritarian European Union presses forward with dreaded Article 13, which has now passed the European Parliament:

Article 13 or ‘The Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market’ makes all platforms legally responsible for the content hosted and shared on their platforms. …

The onus will now be on tech companies to clamp down on content-sharing on their platforms, which will likely ensure yet more draconian policing of speech and content.

EU member states now have two years to pass their own laws putting Article 13 into effect.

How exactly this will be implemented remains to be seen. Many expect upload filters to be mandated. These would put an end to memes (see here and here) and possibly to blogs like this one, as text extracts and even links to copyrighted content could be prohibited.

Imagine an Internet as vapid and homogeneously liberal as PBS or NPR. That is the EU’s likely objective, to be achieved by silencing nonestablishment voices.
