Seniors Leader Blasts Proposal To Ban Internal Combustion Cars by 2040

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (May 16, 2019) – 60 Plus Association Founder and Chairman James Martin today issued the following statement regarding a congressional proposal to ban gasoline powered automobiles by 2040:

“Progressive liberals are lining up behind self-described Socialist Bernie Sanders and Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley in an effort to ban internal combustion cars by 2040. 

“Electric cars are portrayed as an environmental panacea, but nobody wants to talk about the environmental hazards of electric car batteries. They are huge and made out of lithium, cobalt, and other toxic substances. If you think carbon dioxide is bad, just try lithium poisoning. 

“Lithium mining has already killed countless cows, yaks and fish by the millions. Lithium processing requires the use of hydrochloric acid, which can leak into the environment. Forcing all cars in the U.S. to be electric will only increase the environmental devastation already directly linked to the batteries that run them.

“There’s nothing wrong with electric cars but they have to be recharged with electricity from an electrical source, like power plants fired by coal, oil, nuclear or other energy sources. This would be an unprecedented demand on our electrical grid, which is already under stress. 

“Outlawing gas powered cars is nuts. It’s a bad idea that will hurt the environment far more than internal combustion engines. Already, three candidates for the Democrat presidential nomination are supporting this idea and if they keep up this nonsense, they’ll hand President Donald Trump a reelection landslide to rival Ronald Reagan’s 1984 victory.”
