How to Raise a Genius: Grooming Tips for Kids from First to Tenth Standards

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You may wonder how kids these days seem to handle almost every curveball so smoothly. While some people say that kids are growing smarter by the generation, others give the credit to advancing technology. In reality, the magic is in our brains. Human brains have tremendous plasticity. With the right direction and exercise, our brains can be trained to solve calculus, trigonometry, algebra, and remember every fact in Encyclopedia Britannica within a few months.

This capability is something every kid is born with. Every child is born with marvelous talents. You can say kids are all potential Einsteins waiting for someone to guide them towards the right direction. It is a given that parents will want their children to become geniuses when they grow up. But the difference between a genius and just another blue collar worker is made during the kids’ formative years. There is nothing as important as the right education and grooming between the ages of 6 and 16. What kids learn and remember during their schooling days makes all the difference.

Importance of learning mathematics from an early age

Introducing your kids to elementary mathematics early in preschool can develop better logic and reasoning skills in them. A study, conducted by a team of researchers from Northwestern University, showed that kids who were inducted into elementary mathematics early in their lives had higher chances of achieving success later in life.

Is there an upper limit?

While it is absolutely true that your 10 year old can juggle algebra, language, history, piano and swimming all at the same time, it is also true that sometimes too many commitments can overburden them. It is not uncommon for us to see kids exhausted from their daily routines. This brings about reluctance and depression that keeps them from achieving bigger goals. It is not psychologically sound to keep bombarding their small minds with information they seemingly cannot process.

Instead of throwing information left and right, you should establish a process where your children can learn with interest and reproduce the lesson later on. Learning and memorizing should be an audio visual process. Introduce your children to online classroom learning, interactive training games and new toddler songs on Kindle and iPads, and expose them to regular tests to help them judge their own progress.

Here are a few key points that should be incorporated in every grooming process:

  1. Help your child relate – if your child does not relate to a particular topic, he will never find the interest in delving into the lesson. For example, if your child is learning about the parts of a flower, you can make it much easier by creating an infogram of the parts and helping the child learn from real samples. Anything that can induce emotion in the child’s brain can help him remember the facts better.
  2. Reading, writing and reading again – this is a very old and effective process that has helped us through the times of algebra nightmares, history horrors and science challenges. When a child is reading aloud, he is engaging two of his senses — sight and hearing. Writing the same lesson down after 5 minutes helps the child to remember the details better by engaging the sense of vision and touch. Then comes the final reading process where the facts from memory are verified from the textbook or the lesson source.
  3. Teach your child to make connections – this is where the importance of school field trips kicks in. This is a wonderful process that can etch facts permanently into the long term memory of your children. Reading a few meaningless numbers and words does not stimulate a child’s memory. The kid needs to realize that what he is reading is related to the world around him. For example, if you are teaching your kids about the wars in your country or the political offices, it might pay off to take them to the museums to see artifacts and interact with officials.
  4. Forget TV, phones and gadgets – we are not asking you to ground your child. All we are saying is to offer the modes of recreation as rewards for stellar performance. You can start with restricting TV hours and gaming hours. And you can make sure that your child has access to electronic gadgets only after he is done with his day’s lessons. These are primary interruptions that can cause children to become easily irritable, impatient and distracted from their goals.
  5. 8 hours sleep is a must – we know that telling you to allow your child to sleep for at least 8 hours per day might be unrealistic considering their daily routines. But it is scientifically proven that kids under the age of 18 need at least 8 hours of sleep for perfect functioning of their memory. What we learn in the daytime gets stored in out short term memory, only with enough sleep this short term memories are converted to long term memories that kick in during exams. So no more all-nighters before exam day, we rather recommend a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast to kick start the exam days.
  6. Teach your kids to question what they learn – many a times, we have come across wrong information that we have accepted without questioning. This is a debilitating and vicious process that can only be stopped when your child learns to question what he learns. We recommend the use of child-lock on the computers and phones, but we also encourage children to use these media to conduct researches as per their interests. Finding answers to questions helps inculcate interest in children and that is reflected in their grades.

There are quite a few ways in which kids can be groomed to become successful individuals. But these are the few that have been recommended by child psychologists and education specialists from all over the world. It is not proven that the old method of voracious learning before exams just does not work! These are the few ways you can help your kids hit the Ctrl+S buttons permanently.
