How Do I Validate My Facts

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Doofiegirl asked me the following: Mr. Uda, did you know you’re on soda head more now than you were when you were actually writing things there? I send nearly everything you send me there! Everybody is asking me where do you check your facts since you don’t trust those you mentioned in your article.

My response: No, I did not know that my writings are posted on SodaHead more than they were when I personally participated on SodaHead.  Thanks to you, my writings are getting such wide distribution.  In answer to your question regarding where I check my facts, I do it the way everyone else should.  Even Glenn Beck says to his audience never to believe everything he tells us.  He said we should do our own research to get to the truth.  If we do our own research and then conclude that the information is factual and true, then we can go with it.  One thing for sure is that I never trust anything that Snopes.com, FactCheck.org, and TruthOrFiction.com disseminate because of their obvious biases.  Remember, these people writing their pieces about questioned articles are just people like you and I.  Whether they develop factual, truthful information or not depends on several factors including the following:

  • What are their degrees including the level and depth of education and knowledge acquired through formal education?
  • How much reading do they do on a daily basis including books, journals, magazines, newspapers, videos, blogs, television, radio, Internet, etc.?
  • Do they keep up with current events on a daily basis?
  • What is their ability to think logically?  Have they taken any courses in logic?  Have they taken any philosophy, religion, English, languages, financial, economic, mathematics, science, engineering, and other such courses, seminars, and workshops?
  • What is their reasoning ability?  Do they understand the scientific method, the problem solving method, and the debating process?
  • What is their writing ability?  How many books and articles have they written and published over the years?  Have they prepared master’s theses and doctoral dissertations?
  • What is their ability to be objective and to separate facts from opinions?  Do they know the difference between the definition of facts and opinions?
  • What is their ability to perform research in the library, on the Internet, and through interviewing people?
  • Have they performed any teaching, public speaking, training, and leading?
  • Do they recognize bias, prejudice, racism, and politics?  Can they detach themselves from these behaviors?
  • Can they refrain from name-calling, finger pointing, accusations, demagoguery, blaming, cursing, anger, shouting, lying, playing the race card, and physical violence?  Are they able to attack the idea or topic instead of attacking the person?

As you can see, it takes a whole array of education, knowledge, experience, skills, and abilities to be able to ferret out the facts from fiction (separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak).  Those people at the three veracity websites mentioned above apparently do not possess all of the education, knowledge, experiences, skills, and abilities included in the bulleted list above.  If they did, their pieces would not indicate deficiencies in some of those areas.

I have ample education, knowledge, experience, skills, and abilities to meet every one of the requirements in the above bulleted list.  Therefore, I have more faith in what I create, research, and surmise than I have on what others present.  Do not get me wrong.  There are many people who I have great faith in what they say and write.  For example, I highly respect the words of Dr. Thomas Sowell, Dr. Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham—just to name a few.  The lame-stream media is the worst place to obtain facts from and to experience any kind of logical reasoning.  The bottom line: I check my facts against those people who I respect and who provide us with facts and logical reasoning.

LOL. The more articles of yours I check. The less impressed I am.

Do I really need to point out how flawed your response to doofiegirl was?

I think I should at least point out the items that made me laugh out loud.

First, you never did tell her how you check your facts. All you did was try to discredit those that prove you are wrong. This is a logical fallacy. (More on that later.)

The “factors” that affect credibility that you offer are not only ridiculous, but contradictory.

First you suggest that a degree is important… This is an argument from authority. A logical fallacy.

Then you question how much the source reads every day… how could you possibly know this?

Do they keep up with current affairs on a daily basis? This is the same as your second point. You couldn’t possibly accurately guage this.

Have they taken any courses in logic? This is where I began to laugh out loud. Have you taken any courses in logic? If so, did you pass them? An appeal to authority is a fallacy taught in the most basic of logic classes.

It is painfully obvious that you think you meet all the criteria listed… it is also painfully obvious that you are mistaken.
