LNA ‘won’t use air forces’ during advance on Tripoli

The Libyan National Army (LNA) will not use airpower during their advance on Tripoli, according to LNA spokesman Ahmed Mismari in a statement from an undisclosed location on Saturday. “These are restrictions from my Marshal [Khalifa Haftar] as he insists on avoiding using excessive force in order to protect the local population and also private and public properties there,” Mismari said. “Mig, Mirage , Sukhoi and or even other types of planes haven’t been used so far,” he added.

Mismari said that “special security units” would be deployed in Tripoli to ensure the “security of foreign diplomatic delegations” as well as “national and foreign companies.”

“We reassure the international community and people of Tripoli that our plan doesn’t exceed fighting terrorism, terrorists and criminals in Tripoli,” he emphasised.

LNA forces have been moving into positions near the Libyan capital in the past days. The LNA has stated that they have taken control of the city’s international airport as well as other nearby areas.
