Steve King Sees Himself As Kind Of Like Jesus

Steve King, who has said some tremendously misguided (some might even call them “racist” or “white supremacist at the very least!”) things in the past, believes that the outrage over his statements has given him a new appreciation for another man whose message was simply misunderstood by his critics, Jesus Christ.

At a town hall in Iowa, King asked by about the persecution of Christianity. His response is… well, it was something.

“When I have to step down to the floor of the House of Representatives, and look up at those 400-and-some accusers — you know we just passed through Easter and Christ’s passion — and I have better insight into what He went through for us, partly because of that experience,” King told about 30 attendees the town hall at Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Now, sure, the most charitable reading is that he understands what it’s like to stand before your accusers. But a lot of people who are decidedly not Jesus have also done that and many of them would probably be better comparisons. What King is accused of is not really comparable to what Jesus went through. At all.

It’s not even the crucifixion and death part, either. It’s the fact that saying “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” Jesus wasn’t really into supporting the idea of what group of people seeing themselves as being better than the rest.

In fact, Jesus was put to death because he opposed the very people who thought they were better than the rest.

The entire point of Jesus’ death was to grant an opportunity for all to know the love and forgiveness of God. It wasn’t “Only the Jews who believe in me will get into Heaven now.” He talked to people from all walks of life, and that message of “Heaven is possible for everyone” still exists today.

Even if you don’t think what King said was offensive or even misguided, you have to recognize the level of hubris it takes to compare lawmakers stripping you of committee assignments and forcing you to apologize before them to the death and crucifixion of Jesus.

Come on, man. Just… come on.
