No One Should Apologize For the Chants About Ilhan Omar

Yesterday, President Trump was at a rally in North Carolina. During that rally, he went after the group of freshmen communist-Democrats who style themselves as “The Squad” and said:

Tonight I have a suggestion for the hate-filled extremists who are constantly trying to tear our country down. They never have anything good to say. That’s why I say, ‘Hey if you don’t like it, let ‘em leave, let ‘em leave.’

The crowd started a chant of “Send her back,” which is pretty much like “Lock her up.” And, just like with the “Lock here up” chant, a lot of people lost their sh**. What was and should have been a nothingburger became a major social media event. I think a very small number of people were genuinely offended. Most of those claiming offense were from the left, people who hate Trump and have spent the last two-plus years spreading every kind of lie about him that you can imagine. Some were from the “good conservative” and the Vichy Republican side who want to convince the left that they really aren’t like ::sniff those people. The word du jour was “vile.”

My colleague, Brandon Morse, wrote a piece on this taking the position that this was wrong. Please read it. While I understand the sentiment, I don’t agree.

First and foremost, as American citizens we have a right to express our feelings about elected officials. I’d hope everyone understands that. I’d hope that you would agree that you not liking my opinion does not bring with it an obligation on my part to apologize. Nor does it bring with it the right, on your part, to apologize on my behalf. You don’t have to approve but your approval does not make something right or wrong in the abstract. You simply don’t have that ability. I’d also hope that everyone understands that no one is actually trying to deport Omar, though, full disclosure, if that option was on the table I could be convinced to go along with it without too much effort.

Omar is not a random victim here. From day one, Omar has set out to use her perch in the US Congress to smear America. Omar is the woman condemned as an anti-Semite by her own caucus. Omar is the one who referred to US troops fighting to permit food distribution to starving people in the Third World sh** hole her family fled as Satan.

Omar is the person who, this week, compared the movement to boycott Israel with boycotting Hitler. Omar is the person who minimized the horror of 9/11 by calling it “some people did something.” Omar giggled like a school girl over the way people take the organization that killed some 3,000 people in the space of just a few minutes is taken seriously by Americans. Omar is the person whose life was transformed by orders of magnitude by being allowed to take up residence in America and yet she palpably loathes America and Americans.

Omar has made herself a central figure in small clique of left wing fanatics who are hellbent on demonizing anyone who stands in their way, even including Nancy Pelosi. She is blatantly anti-American, here I’m referring to the nation and its people and its culture, and she’s openly sympathetic to our enemies. She has no business in the House of Representatives. Those facts should be hammered home every time she makes a public utterance. Her race and ethnicity are not some kind of Romulan cloaking device that gives her protection from either criticism or ridicule.

Omar was mocked at a rally. Big deal. Contrary to what some on the right are claiming, no one mocked immigrants. No one at the rally called Jews Hitler. No one at the rally made excuses for al Qaeda. No one at the rally encouraged firebombing ICE buildings. No one at the rally compared Border Patrol agents to Nazis. No one at the rally insisted that white elected officials only, to paraphrase the original, “speak with white voices.” None of these actions, I’d note, has anyone on the left or among the Vichy Republicans befouling themselves which speaks to the utter falsity of the outrage over this chant.

This is simply an attempt by left and by Trump opponents to gin up outrage, to try to brand Trump supporters as racists, and to inoculate Omar and her ilk from criticism, parody, or ridicule so they can’t be made the face of the Democrat party. That’s all. Nothing more. Nothing less.
