Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in a Sunday meeting with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, underlined that the Persian Gulf region will remain for its littoral states, adding that trans-regional countries interfering in the region will sooner or later leave it for the regional countries.

“This is you and us who will remain in this region and the aliens have no option but to leave [it for us],” Zarif told Kuwaiti crown prince today, touching upon recent developments in the region.

The top diplomat said that the two countries are enjoying brotherly and friendly ties, and called for the further deepening and broadening of bilateral relations between Tehran and Kuwait City.

For his part, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said Kuwait has always been ready for cooperation and dialogue which best serve region’s stability and security.

Upon arriving in the Arab country’s capital of Kuwait City on Saturday, Foreign Minister Zarif met and held talks with the members of Iran-Kuwait Friendship Group.

A wide range of topics, including the longstanding and close relations between Iran and Kuwait, the necessity of boosting cooperation among the Persian Gulf countries, regional issues such as those relating to Palestine, as well as the US economic terrorism against the Iranian nation were discussed at the meeting.

The Iranian diplomat is scheduled to hold talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart and other senior officials during his one-day trip to the Persian Gulf country.

An opinion poll in March found that 52 percent of Kuwaitis said Kuwait City should maintain good ties with Tehran.

Then in April, Zarif and his Kuwaiti counterpart Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah, in a telephone conversation, voiced determination to bolster ties, and exchanged views on ways to widen cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Late in last month, Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Irani announced that the country has received positive responses from a number of regional states to its proposal to ink a non-aggression pact.

“We have received positive responses from a number of countries and are waiting for other countries’ response too,” Irani said in an interview with the Arabic-language al-Ray newspaper on July 30.
