Preppers List : 10 Things To Do Now!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Update: For some reason I lost this post when I had to set the blog back – good thing that I had a copy in reserve. Feel free to comment, like on Facebook, link to or what have you. I’m sure a lot of the new folks have not read this post. Also see Ten MORE Things To Do Now.

No matter how much I beg, some of you, no doubt haven’t done anything to prepare (you know who you are). I don’t know what else to do. All I can do is give you the information, it’s up to you to act. No one can do it for you.

No doubt some of you are intimidated by my repeated suggestions of storing and using whole grains. If it doesn’t come from the supermarket shelf it’s strange and unfamiliar and you want no part of it. Fair enough.

But you still need to prepare. Here are ten things that you can do right now that will make you better prepared than probably 90% of the population.

And everything is available at your local shopping center – so it’s easy. You can do all ten steps at once or divide each into a separate week and shopping trip. But you need to get it done as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that this is only a starting point and isn’t presented here as a completed list.

1. Head to the nearest Wal-mart, Kmart, Costco or whatever and pick-up 20 lbs of white or brown rice and 20 lbs of pinto beans. White rice has a better storage life while brown rice has more nutritional benefits – your choice.

2. While you’re there grab 5 lbs mixed beans, 5 lbs of white sugar, 5 lbs of iodized salt, one gallon of olive oil (can be frozen to extend shelf-life), 5 lbs oats, 10 lbs each of white or wheat flour and cornmeal.

3. Now head over to the canned foods and pick-up 20 cans of canned fruits and 20 cans of canned vegetables. Be sure to buy only those brands and contents you normally eat and nothing exotic. No need to shock the senses.

4. Now over to the canned meats. Pick-up 20 cans of various meats, salmon, stews, spam and tuna. Again buy only those brands with contents you normally eat and nothing exotic.

5. Okay. Now to the to the peanut butter shelf and toss two 40-ounce jars in the cart. The listed shelf life is just over two years and each jar has over 6,000 calories. Peanut butter is an excellent instant survival food.

6. Over to the powdered drink mix – go on I’ll wait…Okay, pick up two 72 Ounce Tang Orange drink canisters (provides 100% of the US RDA vitamin C requirement per 8 oz. glass). Also grab six 19-Ounce Containers of Kool-Aid Drink Mix.

7. Off to the vitamin and supplement aisle, pick up 400 tablets “one a day” multivitamin and mineral supplements. I buy this brand at the local Wal-Mart – comes in 200 count bottle for $8 each.

8. Now to the department we all love – sporting goods. Go to the camping aisle and pick up 4 five gallon water containers. Fill with tap water as soon as you get back home.

9. While you’re there buy 250 rounds of ammunition for your primary defensive weapon. More if you can, but this should be a good start. Also a good universal cleaning kit.

10. And lastly pick up the best LED flashlight you can afford, extra batteries and bulb. Also grab two boxes of wooden matches and several multi-purpose lighters.

Don’t forget to date, use and rotate – remember first in first out. Let’s get started.

What would you add to the list?

bleach, bags of potatoes, hunting outer wear, Under Armour clothing, sleeping bags, couple tins of bag balm(great for wounds & burns), dust masks (the kind with the exhaling vent), Duct tape, at least 3 sheets of OSB, Nails and screws, cans of expanding foam(great for patching bullet holes in your crib) Aluminum foil, 10×10 tarps, string, coffee filters (great for primary stage water filter), swimmers goggles (great for dusty conditions),ziplock baggies(they always come in handy) SAS survival manual(or any other survival manual, good reading and gets you in a mind set)

You’re better off to buy a bottle of vitamin C (make sure it’s NON gmo) than the Tang filled with chemicals and gmo sugar. Skip the sugar and chemicals, get a bottle of vitamin C and a jar of real honey, and organic sugar if you need it.
Otherwise it’s a sensible list, and you are a good person for wanting to make it easy for people to just get this done so they/we can get by in hard times. Thanks for your effort and for all those trying to help others.

What a waste of my time. Thought this would be a useful piece of info, turns out its an expensive ass grocery list.

A good list! I’d add to it: tincture of iodine (both as an antiseptic, and as an iodine source in case of nuclear fallout), triple antibiotic ointment, jars of boullion cubes, garlic powder, black pepper and chili powder (to make your beans and rice more palatable) a battery powered radio receiver (better if it has weather bands and shortwave, solar or handcrank charging), a couple bulk packages of toilet paper, 10 bars of soap, a couple 5 gallon buckets (use them to store the dried grains to keep bugs out), a spare tank of propane for your gas grill, some DEET insect repellant, 4 quarts of motor oil and spare filter, 100′ of parachute cord, a UPS for your computer, wireless router and cordless phone base station, 10 lb of elbow macaroni or flat noodles, 5 lb of powdered milk….

This is a great post. Good advice.

Don’t forget …infrared binocular’s ..I like my Bushnell night watch 3×32 digital night vision w/color LCD..but I would like to view out of two lens.
And don’t laugh…(think about it)… a inflatable inner tube for each member of your family.
Also tincture iodides and liquid silver.

    • truther357

And infrared bioculars, solar- battery charger, liquid silver and yes, iodides tincture (also for water purification)
And don’t laugh…think about it…a inflatable inner tube for each member of your family!

I like the idea of infrared binoculars but unless you are going to have members of your family do guard duty shifts outside you may need a way to be alerted that there is something outside to check out. This will help:

        /self-sufficiency/2013/02/whats-going-on-outside-2452370.html

This way you can hear what’s going on like you are standing outside.

Baking soda, baking powder, vacuum packed yeast, crackers, coffee, tea, booze (find half price sale), favorite hard candies, jam (what’s PB without the J?), baby wipes to save on water in personal hygiene, hydrogen peroxide, seeds stored in tight jars in fridge … choose vacuum sealed products whenever possible.

Cayenne pepper for general health (google uses for cayenne pepper) white pepper to stop bleeding. Garlic powder and tumeric for natural antibiotikums. Vanilla essence for minor burns. Cornflower and dried lavender mixed for higiene powder. (Use an alternative herb if you don’t want to use lavender maybe rose petals(crushed)) and a note book to write down your haves must haves and friends recipes for the canned food. O and remember potassium.

      • tlc

        what is the potassium for?

Were on the same page. Can I offer a few tweaks?

For a little more money you ca do better than one a day. I would go for the walmart knock off of centrum and probably pay less. Add vitamin C (scurvy prevention).
In regard to LED flashlights, F you are at walmart, make sure to get one or more with a rating of 40 hours. They currently have several. If you have basic electronic skills or know someone who does you can easily convert one of them to a 150 hour flashlight:

      http://www.instructables.com/id/Rayovac-Bright-10-LED-Mod-150-Hours-Under-600/?ALLSTEPS

I would add mung beans and other sproutables and a sprouter so you can have some live food. Pinto bean don’t sprout well. I would personally replaces those with other sproutables:

      /self-sufficiency/2012/12/make-this-easy-bean-sprouter-it-works-great-2450674.html

You may need more stored water. You can do without food for a very long time but not water. In addition to that you can have water storage capability in case it rains or snows:
