Review: Kitchen Witchcraft - Spells & Charms

Kitchen Witchcraft: Spells and Charms, from best-selling author Rachel Patterson, is a the first in a new series of books specifically about kitchen witchcraft – or the kind of magic you can do using ingredients you are likely to find around the home and garden.

Rachel knows what she is talking about when it comes to kitchen witchcraft. She is high priestess of the Kitchen Witch Coven and an elder at the online Kitchen Witch School of Natural Witchcraft as well as having written several successful books on the subject including Grimoire of the Kitchen Witch and A Kitchen Witch’s World of Magical Food.

She is a real all-rounder when it comes to pagan practises and describes her craft as: “a combination of old religion witchcraft, wicca, kitchen witchery, green witchery and folkmagic”. Other books she has written include Pagan Portals – The Cailleach, Pagan Portals – Animal Magic and Witchraft…into the Wilds.
However, she says her heart is that of a kitchen witch and with her new series she is returning to her favourite subject. Kitchen Witchcraft: Spells and Charms is exactly what you would expect from the title – a wonderful collection of spells for every kind of situation. They include practical magic for love, prosperity, protection, courage, luck, employment, healing, fertility, the home, banishing and even a few curses.

The first few chapters cover magical techniques and ways of working in general, offering a good grounding in theory before moving on to specific examples.

Publisher Moon Books says on its website:

There are a lot of things in the universe that we don’t understand. When something is meant to happen, it will whether you cast a spell or not. But you can help it on its way by guiding and encouraging it and maybe even tweaking events a little too. A spell can be worked in many ways, from a simple pointing of the finger to a complicated ritual involving lots of herbs and crystals and, of course, any variation in between.

I’m a fan of Rachel’s commonsense approach to spellcraft, which is very much in keeping with my own view. I look forward to seeing the next books in the Kitchen Witchcraft series, which are set to include garden magic, altars and rituals and the elements.
