Three Questions About the Cowboys as Training Camp Gets Closer
Last season the Cowboys got a return to glory, winning the NFC East with a mark of 10-6 and winning a home playoff game before wilting under the run of the Rams in the Divisional Playoff game in Los Angeles.
There’s a lot of intrigue for the team as they look to enter 2019 with high expectations, as well as a team that should be as good, if not even better.
The club still has plenty of things to sort out as camp gets closer, but they do have a roster full of talent and one that should be able to repeat as champs of the NFC East this season.
Today we take a look at three questions about this team as camp closes in.
1. What Effect Does a Returning Jason Witten Have?
The team was quick to pluck tight end Jason Witten back out of the Monday Night broadcast booth and back onto the field to fill a void they had to fill.
The Cowboys at the tight end spot were not the same in 2018, as Geoff Swaim’s 26 grabs were nowhere near as effective as when Witten is on his game.
Now a year away from football, it will be interesting to see what Witten has left, and if he and QB Dak Prescott can get on the same page early.
His play out of the TE spot might just be enough to lift the Cowboys to the next level.
2. Can Dak be a Star Once and For All?
As a former fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft, there wasn’t quite the pressure right away on Cowboys now starter Dak Prescott.
He’s done all he can do to try and get this team over the hump, like last season throwing for 3885 yards, 22 scores and just eight picks.
Yes he’s due a big contract extension, and you can be he’s going to get it, but at the same time, he needs to take one more step with this team, and now that he’s clearly the biggest star on the roster, it’s time for him to prove he can get it done.
3. DeMarcus Lawrence Ready to Be a Top Three Defensive Player?
For the second straight year, the Cowboys franchise tagged defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence after no deal was reached prior to the deadline in March.
The two sides kept chatting, and finally they agreed to terms on a five-year, $105 million extension with $65 million in guarantees.
There is no doubt that he’s the best defensive player on the team, last season putting up 10.5 sacks with 64 tackles and making plays all over the field.
It’s time for him not only to get mentioned as one of the best in the game, it’s time for him to be one of the best 2-3 players on defense when he takes the field, which means making more game-changing plays.
