Chained box containing werewolf skull unearthed in Novo Selo, Bulgaria

   Novo Selo, Bulgaria — Many of the monsters we celebrate in our Halloween tradition we owe to the folklore of Eastern Europe. One of the most famous has to be the werewolf, or Vrkolak, as the locals would say. 

While doing research for a book on the Balkan Wars, Sofia born author Filip Ganov spent time in a small village called Novo Selo close to Stip in Macedonia. There he met a farmer named Tracyche who claimed to have found a box, chained shut, containing a werewolf while plowing a new section of field.

   Experts have not been able to difinitvely explain the skull but that it was most likely a wolf that suffered from Paget Disease which causes osteoclasts and osteoblasts become overactive and cause boney structures to increase in size. 

  It wasn’t long ago when both humans and animals with malformations were thought to be demon possessed. A wolf such as this would have been deemed a werewolf and precautions such as a chained box would have been neccesary. Others like Tracyche would disagree and remind you that many things in this world still remain unexplained.
