It’s not “the absence of evidence” mantra that matters; it’s the “absence" itself.

The February 15, 2019 issue of TLS (Times Literary Supplement) had a review by Peter Adamson (Author and Professor of Late Ancient and Arabic Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich) of two new books about “global philosophy).

In the review Professor Adamson writes that the book by Julian Baggini [How the World Thinks, Granta] notes that “East Asians are especially attentive to the ‘background’ of paintings and other images, which fits with the thematization of ‘emptiness’ or the ‘spaces between things” in Japanese philosophical writing.”

This reminded me that, a while back, here or at one of my other blogs, I brought up Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes short story The Adventure of Silver Blaze which had this (famous) exchange:

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): “Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”

Holmes: “To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”

Gregory: “The dog did nothing in the night-time.”

Holmes: “That was the curious incident.”

My point was that in UFO reports, it’s the missing elements that provide clues to what really was sighted (or experienced) and maybe an explanation as to what UFOs are.

Jose Caravaca’s Distortion Theory and Albert Rosales, in his vast account of humanoid encounters, often note that UFO events occur within an absence of sound or inside a kind of vacuum of sensory stimulation; that is, nothing that normally would be heard or seen takes place.

UFO events (and other paranormal occurrences) almost always take place as if the witnesses are submerged in a sensory deprived atmosphere or setting.

This, to me, opens the door to possible insight(s) for explaining the event (or sighting) that has taken place. It may be likened to what happens when a person is in the throes of a drug-induced “hallucination” (as neurologist Oliver Sacks related in his writings) or a traumatic event such as a life-threatening accident.

Take for instance the usual accounts of UFO abductions. The person(s) abducted has no real recollection of how they were transported from their normal setting, by their “kidnappers,” to the place (UFO or in-space laboratory) where they are allegedly subjected to some kind of medical-like exam.

UFO witnesses usually remember the gist of their sightings but have no detailed recollection(s) of their surroundings during their observation or experience.

Yes, they can recall some incidental elements (which Caravaca attributes to stimuli of a witness’s psyche by an “external agency”) but, overall, UFO encounters take place in a detail-missing environment.

In the interesting 1966 Michigan sightings (in Ann Arbor/Dexter and Hillsdale), Frank Mannor and his son Ronald and the college co-eds were left with an impression of what they saw (a dimpled craft in a swampy area) but other than that, none had a distinct recollection of anything that might allow for an explanation of what they had perceived; the event was flush with atmospherics but not anything that an engineer or aircraft expert might use to explain what those witnesses actually saw.

In the 1961 Betty/Barney Hill “abduction,” neither Betty or Barney provided under hypnosis or recollection how they were returned to normalcy or what the inside of their kidnappers’ craft was constructed of or if their abductors wore what may be called time-pieces or footwear or something else that stood out.

Were there windows from which the Hills could see where they were, above the Earth or just above their stranded automobile? Did any of their abductors have a disfigurement or noticeable feature. (Betty gave them prominent noses initially but changed that detail as her story continued to be recounted.)

And then there is that simplistic “star map” – a presentation of alien travel (or trade) routes, something that a child might draw, not a map for an advanced species circumnavigating the cosmos.

But those UFO events in which minute details are presented superfluously might be seen as a fictive imagining, whereas an authentic experience would be devoid of detail, the witnesses subjected to, in their mind, a traumatic event.

Travis Walton’s “abduction,” which I’ve often stated seems to have been a drug-induced experience but if true, as he relates it, is missing much information that would go a long way towards explaining exactly what happened to him, whether in reality or inside his mind.

It’s the missing information, the “emptiness” or “spaces between things” in which the reality or not of UFOs may be found.

And “emptiness” doesn’t mean the absence of anything. It merely means that the essence of something lies within that emptiness. It’s just a matter of discerning that that essence is.
