The Dinosaur Extinction: (Nothing to do with UFOs)

A terrific piece, The Day the Earth Died, in The New Yorker issue for April 8, 2019, by Douglas Preston highlights a youngish, maverick Paleontologist Robert DePalma, whose findings in a personal dig at Hell Creek in North Dakota a few years ago confirmed the end of the dinosaur era and the Cretaceous period of Earth’s history.

Preston, a noted author of non-fiction science works, makes readers love DePalma, at least this reader.

The story is a must-read for those who like their science straight-up and vigorous.

One thing that struck me as pertinent to the topic of UFOs or, rather, ufology was this on the magazine’s page 62 of Mr. Preston’s article:

“The history of paleontology is full of tales of bribery, backstabbing, and double dealing.”

Yes, we all know about the dirty dealings in science and other cultural disciplines, even classical music, opera, ballet, art, rock and roll, academia, and certainly politics, et cetera.

So, all the ongoing rants about ufology (even mine) can be lumped into the category of “That’s how things are.”

And this goes to my recent note about a sea-change in the UFO discussions of late, civility and bonhomie among a newer, younger group of UFO enthusiasts.

I noticed that the formidable Christian Savia has little or no affection for the smattering of UFO skeptics running around the UFO community screaming “The emperor has no clothes.” (See the CS notes of April 14 for The Anomalist.)

Hie thee to The New Yorker piece, online, for a scrumptious account of paleontology and one of its newer practitioners.

You will see how science is, like “ufology,” changing for the better, or so it seems.
