UFOs and the U.S. Navy? Why the Navy?

Author and UFO enthusiast Theo Paijmans asked me, awhile back, for sources of my statements, over the years, that the U.S. Navy is the more UFO interested segment of the U.S. military than the Air Force and Army.

And Anthony Bragalia recently had a piece, at his blog, about the Navy’s interest in UFOs; that piece noted here and by The Anomalist.

For some reason, not quite clear to me, the United States Navy has had an inordinate interest in the UFO phenomenon from the beginning of the modern era’s notice (and before) of flying discs and flying saucers, right up to the present day it seems. Why?

Of course there are internecine conflicts of a tempered kind between the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, in football, technology, and war. But UFOs?

And while UFO buffs kept seeking information abut UFOs from the DoD and the Air Force, until the 2004 Nimitz Tic-Tac events and the 2015 and 2016 disclosures of Navy pilots encountering UFOs came to light, now, a day late and a dollar short, ufologists are realizing they should have been checking with and about the Navy’s interest in the phenomenon.

But my question is why the sea-worthy military rather than the air-worthy military, the Air Force (or even Army air)?
