Sunday Special: “Whatever we gotta do”

I was half paying attention to the news this morning while browsing the headlines online, sort of half paying attention to the panel which was discussing the circumstances surrounding the Boston Bombings.  That was when I heard it, something that made me stop and completely dedicate my entire attention to the TV screen.  I can only paraphrase what I heard, but it was in line with several other comments I’ve read/heard over the last few days.  They all call for more safety sacrificing any/all freedoms by the populace in order to achieve this safety.

Whatever we gotta do to keep the people safe, the kids safe, that’s what the politicians and Supreme Court need to understand.  

Whatever we gotta do, even if it means cameras on every single street corner.

Whatever we gotta do, to include going through everyone’s online data and their personal computers.

Whatever we gotta do, people will need to sacrifice their personal freedoms in order for all of us to be safe.

Whatever we gotta do, because those people and children didn’t deserve to die.

While I certainly sympathize with the victims of the bombings, to what length should we be willing to sacrifice our security for any sense of perceived safety?  Would it be worth it to live a life under the microscope of Big Brother in order to feel safe?  Why stop at cameras on street corners, lets put them in our cars and homes too, after all if you have nothing to hide this shouldn’t bother you.  Let’s just make all emails, phone conversations, text messages and social media readily available to any government agency for data mining, after all if it keeps us safer it’s worth it.  Let’s offer rewards to citizens who report on their neighbors (maybe they look suspicious), especially if those reports turn up data which could lead to a conviction.  Finally I suggest we all have to check in with our local law enforcement representative once a year so that they can get a feel for how we are doing, almost like a parole officer.  If they sense we have been up to things that do not represent “normal” behavior they might dig deeper into our personal lives, for everyone’s safety of course.

So I ask you, how far do we go with what will inevitably be labeled as common sense solutions?  After all if we save just one more life it would be worth it…right?
