CRKT Eat’N Tool Review

I am a sucker for compact gadgets and new designs on a pretty much age old concept, so when I ran across the CRKT Eat’N Tool at a trade show it piqued my interest.  At first glance, it was an impressive little tool that I figured would make a nice addition to my bugout bag.  As with most other gadgets and tools that I have acquired over time, I could not wait to put this tool through the paces.

The weight and length of this tool makes it an ideal option for bugout bags, hiking trips, and any other use where space and weight are critical items that must be considered.  At 1.5 ounces I doubt anyone would notice the weight and at four inches in overall length, the tool can be carried easily in a cargo pocket, day pack, or other small area.

Spork:

The extended tines on the spork make stabbing a piece of meat or fruit relatively easy and the spoon works well for the size for beans, oatmeal, etc.  The drawback for functionality as an eating utensil is its overall length and it is almost impossible to use in containers any deeper than a Vienna Sausage can.

Bottle Opener:

The bottle opener functions as it should and is sturdy, although, I am not one to carry bottles into the field, so I am not certain how much use I would get from this feature in a true survival situation.  It does make a nice option for when your buddy decides to bring non-twist top beer on a fishing trip though.

Metric Wrench:

The wrench heads are functional for exposed 10mm, 8mm, and 6mm nuts and bolt heads.  The problem that I have is that it is all metric but it is functional as advertised and I have other tools in my bugout bag that would actually work better, so as with the bottle opener, I do not know how much use I would have for this option.

Common Screwdriver and Lid Pry:

These are actually one in the same in my book and the edge is functional for smaller common screws and I used the feature to pry open cans ranging from small fuel to large paint cans.

Overall, I chock this one up to my love of gadgets.  It will not replace other tools or multi-functional items in your bag but if you are looking for a light weight space saving spork that cannot reach the bottom of a soup can, it might just be the tool you have been looking for.  Personally, I will stick to the longer spork for the bag and leave the multi-functional to the other tools I have selected previously that work much better.  At $6.00, I was not hurt with this purchase and still keep it in my tackle box for those times that I happen to forget my super spork.
