Calamity’s Top 10
\”Are YOU Ready?\”
I like to go into depth with my posts, talk about the details of things as they relate to my life. Today is just not one of those days though.
Here are the top 10 things I’d want in my survival situation. (In no particular order.)
10
My largest metal pot. It can boil a ton of water. Most survival situations are going to require a lot of hot water, from something other than your hot water heater. Above and beyond our “normal” uses of hot water, that of laundry and personal cleansing, if water sources are compromised, drinking and cooking water will need to be boiled.
9
My steel Mora knife. This knife doesn’t live in the BOB, nor is it day-to-day on my belt. It hangs out on top of the dresser when I’m not out hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. But it’s definitely in my top 10. It will spark with a firesteel. It can break down small game and handle any number of tasks with ease.
8
My sturdy hiking boots. Bugging out, bugging in, pretty much any survival situation is going to require a lot more walking and carrying. Keeping my feet and ankles happy is key to keeping me going.
7
My pile of wool blankets. They can be used as is for warmth, or for moisture protection. They can be cut up for fashioning into sturdy bags, straps or clothing.
6
My garden seeds. Any survival situation is going to need ways for me to feed my family. Grocery stores only work as long as the trucks are running and California is selling. I have a variety of seeds, some that will produce in as quickly as 40 days in chilly damp weather, some that need a nice long hot summer to produce.
5
My BOB. It’s in a bag and by the door, so yes it counts as one thing. My blog my rules. First aid, change of clothing, emergency whistle, compass, fire steel and tender, reflective blankets, hand sanitizer, soap, copies of important documents and a few little games for the kids.
4
My baby wrap. The youngest is still a wee one and there are all sorts of terrains and situations where having him strapped to my body is the best way to keep him safe. It also keeps my hands less full of busy little boy.
3
My shotgun. I know, I know, it’s not the most versatile, best survival weapon ever made, but it’s what I’ve got. And having it would make any survival situation better than not having it.
2
My parka. The weather is downright deadly for 3 – 4 months of the year, I’d hate to leave without it and then freeze to death.
1
My laptop so I could find random patches of wireless internet and keep up on all my SHTFBlog posts!
Ok, so that last one is a stretch, but hopefully you enjoyed the rest of it. Does it come close to your top 10 list? Sound off in the comments!
