If You Only Had Four Pieces of Gear…

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Here’s one of my favorite “What if…” games to play with other outdoorsmen.

The scenario:

You’re canoeing down a river on a solo camping trip and you get caught in some rapids you didn’t know were there.  Boom!  Your canoe tips over and most of your gear and your canoe is gone.  Swept away and destroyed.

You’re 25 miles from civilization and you neglected to tell anybody you were going on a canoe trip and now it looks like you’ve got to walk out.  Luckily you were able to salvage four pieces of gear before it all got lost.

Here’s the fun part.  You get to choose what four pieces of gear that would be.   Let’s say it’s spring in your area.  Here in Maine it’s early April as I write this and the temps outside at night can get down to the low 20′s and during the day it can into the 50′s.  That’s in Fahrenheit by the way.

Armed with this information what would you salvage?

Personally I’d get a Kleen Kanteen, my Becker survival knife, a poncho, and a fire steel.

What are your choices?  How about it outdoorsmen?

First thing on the agenda would be to keep a clear and presence of mind to understand the situation I found myself in, no panic, no fear, and no worries. Gear wise, I am the type of person who can walk into the wilderness and come out with a pocket full of change, didn’t get here by accident either, it took years of study practice and determination to succeed in any event I found myself in. There were in fact times I tested myself in the field, preservation and a clear and capable mind determined to survive are the three most important factors one can obtain in order to come out ahead of the herd.
Gear, yeah that’s the primary question, first, a good knife, second, would be a dry set of clothing, and finally the third item, a compass, but not necessary. The good knife is all that is required by qualified person in this situation, dry clothing is foremost of importance to this guy because I hate nothing worse in my life then to be miserable while being wet, can’t stand the feeling. Can’t take the chance of getting ill to the point of being frozen in place because of my nerves going hay-wack. All else is pure luxury at this point, fire can be started without a fire stick, most wear boots while on this type of venture, the strings have many uses, you just have to known them, shelter can be easily constructed with the knife, and food is abundant in the wilderness if you know what to seek out for the most bang for the buck, a spear is easily fashioned out of a hard wood available all around and in most wooded area’s. Obtaining food is not all that hard to obtain when educated enough to realize the setting and what it has to offer.
All in all this is the very situation I have long studied and exercised for, I realize most have no desire to put themselves in this situation, some of us are about limits, every man in this world must come to the realization of his individual limits, and work on them from there. Nothing like practice, practice some more and then keep on practicing, every venture is a lesson in survival techniques for the persons who push harder for better results. I love this type of lifestyle and that alone puts me above and beyond the average persons who may find themselves in this type of scenario.
Again, the attitude of a good sound presence of mind to fully understand the difficult scenario’s you may encounter is the best advice I could ever give to anyone.
      Semper Fi -baby.

Twenty five miles is really not much, if civilization is that close My first piece of gear would be my wallet and credit cards so I can have a hamburger and a beer while I wait for the Taxicab.
