Boehner Betrayal: I Believe I’ll Have Another

Some have used the latest John Boehner-led betrayal to paint conservatives as a battered spouse who keeps crawling back to an abusive Republican Party.  Although compelling, the analogy lacks something.  Even a battered spouse eventually wises up, something I see little evidence will ever happen with most of the GOP faithful.  The more pertinent analogy is that of a chronic alcoholic who doesn’t even realize he has a problem.  Far too many self-identified conservatives fail to grasp just how far we’ve fallen or how much has been lost.  To wit they continue the self-destructive behavior that got us here and pull the red lever for a party that abandoned them long ago.  “This time will be different; I can control myself” they say as they imbibe on bullshit, only to wake up in the gutter.

Tea Party advocate Jenny Martin put it succinctly in an op-ed in the New York Times – “The goals of groups like ours are those that congressional Republicans once espoused: smaller government, less spending and lower taxes.  Make no mistake: The [budget] deal is a betrayal of the conservatives who fueled the Republicans’ midterm shellacking of Democrats.”

Perhaps most troubling about the above quote is that the “mid-term shellacking” that Martin alludes to in it is the 2010 version.  In fact the entire quote is excerpted from an Op-ed she penned back in 2013.  (!!)

You remember 2013, right?  Not the current relapse, but the prior one.  That was back when Boehner and his cronies, despite having all the power, crumbled, rolled over and funded Obamacare.  This is not to be confused with last week when they again had all the power, crumbled, rolled over and funding amnesty.

What’s worse than the idea that Obama outsmarted Republican leaders is the ugly truth.  They weren’t swindled, not even close.  They actually agree with him.  It was only the latest step for a Republican Party has been migrating toward becoming the party of big business rather than the party of fiscal and social restraint.   Big business wants amnesty, so they ram it through.  The script has flipped.  The GOP isn’t being hijacked by moderates; it solely consists of moderates and uses conservatives, Christians and libertarians only when necessary to win elections.  After those elections are won, the afterglow fades and we wake up in a relapse.

They hate us, and they use us because we allow them to.  We stick with a party that is a slightly watered-down version of the democrats out of fear.  They use that fear to gain power, then rubber stamp a 1600-page, trillion-dollar monstrosity of a budget that gives a colossally unpopular president a slush fund including everything he ever wanted. Perhaps most disheartening, this time they didn’t even bother with many of the photo-op style “procedural votes” they typically use to pretend to oppose legislation they support.  In short, they aren’t even going through the motions.

Their arrogance is only matched by their machismo, as they challenge us to do something about it.  Where else are you going to go?  Sit down, shut up and take it.  Party leaders know you are a junky and you need your fix.  Without the Republican Party, you have no ballot access.  Without the Republican Party you can’t get the committee appointments.  Without the GOP you will be left to the whims of the democrats.

I got news for you.   WE ALREADY ARE.  We officially have bottomed out. It is high time we get clean, and we don’t even need a twelve-step program to do it. Let’s start with five.

Five Steps To Clean Living

• Oppose all incumbents; regardless of party- Most voters honestly believe the problem is everyone else.  They hate congress but love their congressman.  I have news for you, your congressman sucks too.  There are precious few exceptions.  Unless your candidate is hated by the Republican leadership, he’s not doing his job.  Unless Boehner and McConnell have called him or her out, they are the enemy– vote ‘em out.
• Support primary opponents and where necessary, run as independents- Party endorsements should be treated like a scarlet letter.  Conventional wisdom has said that third party candidates in general elections are bad because they weaken the splintered party.  Yes and yes.   That is the goal.  Don’t hold your nose and support a moderate, they’ll only lie before they enact the same policies as their opponents would have.
• Find a third party and get active- If you aren’t already, you need to become a fringe nutjob, it feels great.  Many of the third parties already have ballot access at the local level and they are so underfunded and disorganized, they need your help.  You may even find yourself on their ballot soon.
• Educate others- Take to social media, speak out.  Share your thoughts on God, guns and the Constitution with family and friends.  The silent majority has been silent too long.  Truth is timeless.  Swim against the current of the age.  When someone tells you they are a Republican, challenge them.  Conservative and Republican are no longer synonyms; the party is in a civil war.  Make sure everyone gets that message and picks a side.

The easy thing to do would be to ignore all of this get frustrated and disengage.  That is exactly what they want you to do.  Then they’ll come around singing a siren song at election time. They’ll fire you up, pick your pockets and then stab you in the back.  Don’t take the bait.  It is time to put down the bottle once and for all.
