Is It a Good Idea to Insulate Your Garage?

The path to preparedness…

Detail of a car entering through garage door A garage is one of the most prominent features in the front or back of a home. Its door is also the largest openings in townhouses with built-in garages. Because this door is the largest entry way to a home, it’s also the most vulnerable spot in your property, given to rapid heat loss and chilly drafts.

An easy solution to this is to insulate your garage door.  It’s an added cost, yes, but this home improvement will pay off in so many ways.

Decreases Your Electric Bill

The constant opening and closing of your garage doors leads to significant energy loss. By letting all that warm air out and without the benefit of insulation, your heaters work twice as hard to warm your home. It’s the same effect with central air conditioning; letting all the cool air out by frequent opening of the garage doors, or through the thin, non-insulated walls is a huge waste of energy. Your AC has to work twice as hard to cool your home consistently.

With reduced consumption of your heating and cooling systems, you’re likely to get more manageable energy bills. In addition, you and your family will feel more comfortable no matter the weather.

Quieter Than Non-Insulated Garage Doors

Some garage doors make squeaking sounds with every roll up or roll down. When the source of the noise isn’t the track mechanism, the loose chains, or its hinges and springs, then the offender is most likely the garage door panel itself. Lightweight garage door panels vibrate and cause noise. This can be bothersome if you have a room directly above the garage.

Insulated garage doors make lesser noise compared to a non-insulated one, the materials compacted tightly together causing less vibrations. Because insulated doors are heavier, it’s not likely to jolt on its track. Not only do insulated doors dampen noise from the inside, but it also serves as a cushion for outside noise due to its composition.

Increased Durability

Non-insulated garage doors are usually single layered and made of light materials. Insulated garage doors on the other hand are usually made of steel or aluminum frame; significantly stronger material than thin steel sheets wrapped over panel frames, which are typically make up non-insulated garage doors.

Steel or aluminum framed insulated doors are filled with solid-core insulation in between single or dual steel panels. This type of insulated door is energy efficient and less likely to dent than other garage doors. The material and construction of an insulated garage door makes it more durable than a single sheet, non-insulated door.

Setting It Up for Convenience

By insulating your garage door, you’re setting up the room for convenience. With insulation, the room isn’t too chilly in winter or too hot in summer, making it as ideal as any other room in the house to hang out in. You can convert your garage into anything you want — be it a fitness room, or simply as a place to relax.

Regulate the temperature in your entire house by having your garage doors insulated. Not only is it convenient, but it makes your home energy efficient as well.
