A Guide to Effective Tree Care

The path to preparedness…

When you select a tree, you don’t simply plant it and let it grow by itself. You should also know correct tree care techniques to ensure that it will thrive because the first few years of a tree’s life will affect its strength and shape. So you need to know about proper watering, mulching, and pruning. Pruning the tree the wrong way can cause irreparable damage to it. There are, of course, tree-trimming experts in Salt Lake City who can ensure proper pruning. Here are tree care techniques that you can follow:

Homeowners are expected to keep their trees and shrubs pruned at all times so that there are no overhanging branches on public property. Aside from ensuring the visibility and safety of sidewalks and streets, it will also help prevent damage to your other plants as it will reduce breakage and accidental collisions.

When pruning your tree, take note of the season, as the climate affects when and how you should trim your trees.

  • Winter pruning. If you want a more robust and vibrant burst of growth in the spring, then prune your trees during its dormancy period in the winter season. Experts advise to let the coldest part of the winter season pass before pruning.
  • Summer pruning. Prune your trees as soon as seasonal growth is complete if you want to slow or “dwarf” the development of a branch or a tree. The slowing effect helps decrease the total leaf surface, which reduces the amount of food manufactured that are sent to the tree roots. You may also want to prune during the summer to remove broken or diseased limbs, as they are more visible during this time.

Avoid trimming during the fall season, as this is the time when spores of decay fungi are spread profusely. Additionally, cut wounds heal much slower on fall.

Enrich the soil with organic mulch over the tree roots about two to four inches deep under the crown. This will help prevent grass from stealing the water and nutrients meant for your tree. Just make sure that you don’t mulch around or near the trunk.

Water should cover most of the tree roots, so it should penetrate the top 12 to 18 inches of soil where your tree is. Trees prefer a thorough soaking even if it’s done only once a week, rather than light, frequent water applications.

The Removal of Invasive Plants

Invasive plants, such as English Ivy, can weaken or even kill your tree, so keep them as far away from your tree. Don’t just remove the vines off the trunk. You also need to make sure that you remove the ones above the roots, as they can also damage your tree.

Tree care or maintenance can be quite complicated, as it requires extensive knowledge and experience. If you’re not that experienced, it’s best to leave the job to the experts to avoid damaging your tree. Tree care experts know what they are doing. They can also help you achieve your goals. For example, if your goal is to enhance the flowers of your tree, they know how to make that happen without inconveniencing you.
