Rome is a well known European city that has become one of the most popular travel destinations for tourists from all around the world. The capital city of Italy is full of attractions, full of vibrant life and many reminders of its glorious past. What can you see in Rome? You’ll encounter here beautiful Roman squares, fountains, great museums, ancient, medieval and Renaissance historical buildings. Rome is a living history museum.

From its contemporary performing-arts zone around the Auditorium to its collection of antiquities along the Fori Imperiali street, every district in Rome is witness of two millennia of city’s history spreading on 2,700 years. There are so many city landscapes worthy to see in Rome that it is difficult to choose what to visit in just a few days. We will guide you here on what is more worthy to see in Rome.

The Tridente area along Corso street, on the Tiber river’s eastern bank, houses top-name designer stores, antique shops and high street fashion. You can see there innumerable churches and piazze, such as piazza Mattei with its turtle fountain in the Jewish Ghetto, or Campo de’ Fiori with its colourful and picturesque morning food market. Campo dei Fiori can make an interesting start of your exploration day as it gets animated and lively in the mornings with flower and market vendors.

If you travel further east you’ll find the medieval Monti with its artisans’ workshops, boutiques, and eateries. If you traverse the Tiber river, you’ll find Trastevere with its picturesque charm nd the first Christian church in Rome, Santa Maria. The narrow Borgo in the north it’s a good place to pick up souvenirs related to the Pope. Via Cola di Rienzo in Prati offers high-street fashion outlets and exquisite delis.

When it comes to sightseeing in Rome, the first-century AD Colosseum is a landmark you won’t want to miss. This monument to ancient engineering still remains a blueprint for stadium construction in our modern era. The ticket of your visit to the Roman Colosseum also covers the the Roman Forum and the Palatine. The Roman Colosseum, is a huge amphitheater dating from the times of the Roman Empire. The building was raised in the first century AD and it was intended to be a venue for wild animal and gladiatorial fights.

Today the Colosseum makes one of the most visited historical monuments in Rome. Nearby the Colosseum you can visit the Palatine Hill with its museum and excavations. The best time to visit is on Sundays when you can walk because the road to the Colosseum is closed to traffic. Nearby the Colosseum you can visit the Roman Forum with its huge complex of arches, basilicas, and temples, that was the social, legal, and ceremonial centre of ancient Rome.

Another superb ancient building that outstands well the passing of time is the Pantheon, originally a temple to the Pagan panoply, that now houses the tombs of monarchs and great artists, including Raphael.

Dominating the river Tiber near St Peter’s Basilica is Castel Sant’Angelo, built up on top of the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. A centrepiece of the Catholic church worldwide, St Peter’s Basilica amazes visitors with its Renaissance splendour and its sheer size. Other Catholic cathedrals worth visiting in Rome are San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria della Vittoria built in Baroque style. The historical square Piazza Navona, houses Bernini sculptures.

On Panetteria street you will find the magnificent Trevi Fountain that was build in the year 1762. It is a tradition among Rome’s tourists to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain in order to make sure you will come back to Rome.
Other interesting landmarks to see in Rome are Piazza Navona, the Via Appia Antica, and the catacombs. The Ancient Appia Way is a regional park now, but in the past it was a major road in the Roman Empire. Piazza Navona houses three Baroque fountains.
