Ubisoft Abandoning PC Gaming

I may have blogged too soon yesterday when I suggested that Platinum Games might talk to Ubisoft about partnering on a “MadWorld” sequel if Sega really wants out of the M-rated Wii game market. The French publisher’s CEO Yves Guillemot cited “great Wii success during the holiday season” this week, but he cited the success in spite of unmet financial goals. Now it looks like Ubisoft will be joining Sega and maybe Capcom, depending on which day of the week it is, in de-prioritizing Wii releases.

“The 2010-11 line-up will be more focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3, the consoles which are expected to experience sustained sales growth in games for gamers in calendar 2010,” a financial results report from Ubisoft stated.

Luckily, “No More Heroes 2” is already on that calendar later this month. Were it not, rage might have exposed itself this morning at my computer.

Adult Wii game players — or at least buyers — must be dwindling down into a subculture in big companies’ eyes lately. It would be nice to look the RSS feed one morning and read about some indie publisher stepping up to help fill the space the big ones are going to leave behind on the Wii. Until then, at least we’ve got “NMH2″ coming out on January 26.
