NPR reported yesterday that over the past year, one-half of Americans went hungry at one time or another. The United States however, has billions to spend on an illegal attack on Syria and Barack Obama says money is no an issue for this, as American families live in their cars and tent cities, wondering where their next meal will come from.
The Vermonter with a history of breaking with presidents of both parties on matters of principle has asked questions “more likely to be heard on Main Street than in the cloistered conference rooms where administration aides are asking members of Congress to authorize the use of force against Syria,” reports the Nation on Friday.

“We’ve cut back on education, we’ve cut back on nutrition programs, we’ve thrown kids off Head Start,” says Sanders. “We have billions to spend on a war but no money to take care of the very pressing needs of the American people. That bothers me a lot.”
In November 2012 the U.S. Census Bureau said that over 16% of the population, that’s one in six Americans, lived in poverty in the U.S., including almost 20% of American children, up from 14.3% (approximately 43.6 million) in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993. In 2008, 13.2% (39.8 million) Americans lived in poverty

Those who voted for the war of aggression are considered Nuremberg-level war criminals, complicit in leading Americans into another illegal war, while children at home go hungry, or line up for food at soup kitchens and other places.

Sanders is continuing to listen to the arguments, “But,” he said on MSNBC’s The Ed Show Wednesday evening, “I would be less than honest with you if didn’t say I had very, very deep concerns about this proposal. And, by the way, I can tell you that in my office the phones are bopping off the hook and almost unanimously people are opposed to what the president is talking about.”
The senator, with a long track record of engaging with international human rights issues, expressed deep concern about the deployment of chemical weapons, and about the “humanitarian” issues raised by developments in Syria. He worries about the United States kick-starting “a third Middle East war in 12 years [that] may make a very bad situation even worse.” He fears the United States “getting dragged into an interminable war.”
“What distinguishes the senator’s response is the extent to which he is speaking about priorities. Or, rather, about the impact a new global policeman project might have on the ability of an easily distracted Congress to recognize—even in a time of military conflict—that the fundamental economic challenges facing tens of millions of Americans must be addressed,” the Nation reports.

There were about 643,000 sheltered and unsheltered homeless people nationwide in January 2009. Almost two-thirds stayed in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program and the other third were living on the street, in an abandoned building, or another place not meant for human habitation. “(The) truth,” says Sanders, “is that a largely dysfunctional Congress has difficulty today focusing on the very serious issues facing our country:
the disappearing middle class,
high unemployment,
low wages,
high cost of college,
decline of our manufacturing sector and the
planetary crisis of global warming.”

“I fear very much that U.S. involvement in another war in the Middle East, and the cost of that war, will make it even harder for Congress to protect working families,” Sanders said.
Is it OK to send children to bed hungry? Apparently the Obama administration thinks so, as did the Bush administration.
