Putin Stages 50,000 More Troops on Ukraine Border
Russian troops are massing on the Ukrainian border, doubling forces stationed there in just a few days. At least 50,000 additional troops in Crimea are being moved toward the border.
Vladimir Putin is telling the world the deployments are part of training exercises, but many people in the international community are not so sure. The Russian President made similar statements just prior to invading the Crimean Peninsula.
President Obama said, “these [actions] are not what Russia would normally be doing. It may simply be an effort to intimidate Ukraine, or it may be that they’ve got additional plans.”
Much of the information about Russian troop movements is based on satellite images. This means estimates of ground troop sizes vary greatly.
Yarema Dukh, spokesman for Ukraine’s defense agency, estimated 88,000 troops, under command of Moscow, are at his doorstep.
Alexander Malevany, an official with the Russian intelligence network warned the west that offensive spy program are in operation. He reported this is being done to counter western influence in the area.
The official told Interfax, “There has been a sharp increase in external threats to the state. The lawful desire of the peoples of Crimea and eastern Ukrainian regions is causing hysteria in the United States and its allies.”
The President is telling the press he believes Putin has a long-held grudge over the Ukraine that dates back decades.
Following the failed coup in Russia against Michael Gorbachev in 1991, Ukraine declared its independence.
Last month, Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych was ousted after massive demonstrations. Putin has described the new government in Kiev as illegal.
As troops move in the region, both sides are preparing for the worst for the European nation of 44 million people.

“Western governments are using the alleged Russian troop movements to justify the steady boosting of their military presence in the Baltic states. The former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were admitted into NATO in 2004, but the military alliance did not previously deploy troops there in order not to provoke Russia. The three states have tiny armies, numbering between 5,000 and 12,000 each, and without any tanks or fighter jets.
This is now being changed. The US has already sent six F-15C combat planes to Lithuania. Britain has promised to send four jets. Other NATO members, including Germany, have also been asked to provide aircraft, including AWACS spy planes that can look deep into Ukraine and Russia.
Simultaneously, NATO has decided to hold Navy exercises in the Baltic Sea, with Norway or Germany providing the command vessel.
Poland, which shares a border with Ukraine, is also the scene of a military build-up. The US has already sent 300 military personnel and 12 warplanes to the country.
NATO foreign ministers meeting on Tuesday in Brussels are expected to decide on further measures. A NATO spokesman announced that they will halt practical collaboration with Russia in the Russia–NATO Council and “extensively” increase military collaboration with Ukraine.”
