Truth, the First Casualty of War

As the saying goes, ‘history is the propaganda of the victors’ and is best seen in Wikipedia’s notorious spin. It is also recognisable in books deemed politically correct enough to be published. Palace publishers have a knee-jerk negative reaction to any submitted manuscript that departs from war victors’ speak.

Any question as to the casualty rate suffered by Bolshevik Occupied Russia (USSR) during World War II gets the mantra ‘20 million’ reply.  According to the palace historian Max Hastings, the Soviets lost 26 million during World War II thus ‘saving the world from the scourge of a world free of bankers’ usury’.

Russiapedia puts the body count at 26.6 million yet confusingly, Josef Stalin, or ‘Uncle Joe’ as was preferred by Western journalists put the Soviet casualty rate at 7 million at Fulton in 1946.

Interestingly, this figure is three million Christian martyrs less than those the tyrant conceded were purposely starved to death in Ukraine due to the USSR exporting the people’s harvests.

Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev, another Soviet leader feted by ‘Cold War’ politicians and drooled over by journalists put the figure of Soviet casualties at 20 million.

Does anyone ever follow up by asking, ‘how these widely differing figures were arrived at?’

Joe Stalin’s Soviet Union, which at the outbreak of war in 1939 was already responsible for 30 million ‘killed by government’, had no appetite for taking population census before or after the conflict. How then during the chaos of war was it possible to do a total or battlefield body count?

According to estimates by the exiled professor of statistics I. A. Kurganov, from 1917 to 1959, and excluding war losses, only from terrorist destruction, suppression, hunger, the high mortality in the camps, and including the subsequent low birth rate cost us (Russia) 66.7 million people (The Gulag Archipelago, part 3, Chapter 1).

Has any palace historian or Wikipedia contributor ever dared to comment on the Soviet Union’s responsibility for a considerable number of the Soviet Union’s losses whatever they were?

The puzzling question ~ and there are many if a little thought is given to the propaganda of the victors, how was it possible for the attrition rate to be so much in favour of the Axis?

According to official figures the total strength of the Axis forces on the Eastern Front (1941 – 1945) averaged 3 million; not all were combatants.  

How then, were the Axis armies, desperately fighting to hold various fronts against the onslaughts of the British and American supplied Red Army, able to kill up to 30 Soviet citizens for every member of the Axis forces lost (850,000).
