NORAD Chief Admits US Military's Unpreparedness to Defend North America During Trump Era

It appears that the US military was not fully prepared to defend North America during the Trump Administration, according to the recent statement of NORAD Chief, Air Force Gen. Glen VanHerck. He admitted that the intelligence community had failed to detect the presence of Chinese surveillance balloons that had flown over the country, and only learned of their existence ‘after the fact’.

VanHerck attributes this to a ‘domain knowledge gap’ and takes responsibility as the commander of NORAD to detect any threats to North America. The discovery of these spy balloons has sparked a new diplomatic row and raised questions about the information that was potentially withheld from the Trump administration.

The intelligence community is now preparing to brief important officials from the previous administration on this issue. The lack of action taken against the balloon when it first entered US airspace also raises concerns about the military’s ability to respond to potential threats in real-time.
