Senate report shows CIA lying about torture

Did the CIA purposely mislead the American public about torture of prisoners by U.S. forces? A new Senate report shows that is exactly what happened.

According to the Washington Post, the American military and the CIA spent years torturing detainees and lying to the public about the programs.

In 2013, the intelligence committee prepared a report on highly-classified “black sites.” This organization oversees the Central Intelligence Agency.

Current and former officials of the federal government say military interrogators regularly tortured prisoners. This treatment often continued even after they were certain no more information could be obtained from the suspect.

The Senate report stated American forces would use four steps during interrogations. First, they would inflate the crimes the prisoners were accused of carrying out. Second, they would obtain needed information using normal interrogation techniques. Next, they would torture prisoners, and then claim the intelligence was obtained during torture.

The senate report “cites cases in which officials at CIA headquarters demanded the continued use of harsh interrogation techniques even after analysts were convinced that prisoners had no more information to give.” (1)

Methods of torture carried out by U.S. forces included immersing the prisoner’s body in ice water. In Thailand, several employees of the CIA quit their jobs over the practice.

According to the in-depth study, the CIA regularly misled lawmakers and the public over what information was obtained through standard techniques versus torture.

Possible motives for the torture and false reporting of the program are unknown, and were not discussed in the study.

A CIA spokesperson told the press his organization would not comment on the report until they read a complete version of the 6,300 page report.
