Tornado Hits Nuke Facility: Info Scarce--What Are They Hiding? video and pictures not safe for work viewing

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

by Monica Davis

A tornado hit a nuclear facility in Paducah, Kentucky Sunday. That’s right. It hit a nuke facility. According to plant officials, it did not damage.

I am confused. If it “hit” the facility, how could there be no damage? If it “hit” the definition of a hit is some damage. Now, it may have hit a stairwell, crashed a window, or hit a railing, but if it “hit something” by definition there had to be some kind of damage, otherwise there would have been no “hit”.

Tornado damage near nuke plant

Aerial view

So, this brings us to the Louisville Courier Journal and writer James Bruggers, who writes:

“That’s the aging nuclear fuel factory that’s in the process of being shut down.

Local news reports out of Paducah quote officials as saying there’s no problem, however.”

WPSD reports:

Plant officials indicated a tornado may have touched down within the plant perimeter causing damage to some of the plant’s facilities. The plant’s Incident Commander requested activation of the EOC to assist in the response to issues that have occurred when the tornado struck. No injuries were reported at the plant, and there has been no off-site impact from damage that occurred at the plant. Operations are remaining stable.  MOREHERE

But, go along, folks. There is nothing to see here,.

Now, what kind of facilities were hit?

The Paducah Sun’s version of the facility press release says:

Most of the damage was confined to the exteriors of plant structures. No production systems were affected and all critical safety systems continued to function as intended.

Well, isn’t that DAMAGE?

What is really ironic is that the plant couldn’t legally stay open or shut down.  Accordingn to an area environmentalist:

Disaster is about to strike in western Kentucky, a full-blown nuclear catastrophe involving hundreds of tons of enriched uranium tainted with plutonium, technetium, arsenic, beryllium and a toxic chemical brew. But this nuke calamity will be no fluke. It’s been foreseen, planned, even programmed, the result of an atomic extortion game played out between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the most failed American experiment in privatization, the company that has run the Paducah plant into the poisoned ground, USEC Inc.  MOREHERE

Jeffrey Sea, founder of several non-profits wrote that a few years ago, just as the government and plant operators were shutting the plant down. In May, 2013 he wrote:

DOE is five months away from the start of 2014 spending authority, needed to fund clean power-down at Paducah. Meanwhile, USEC’s total market capitalization has declined to about $45 million, not enough to meet minimum listing requirements for the New York Stock Exchange, pay off the company’s staggering debts or retain its operating licenses under financial capacity requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Paducah plant cannot legally stay open, and it can’t safely be shut down—a lovely metaphor for the end of the Atomic Age and a perfect nightmare for the people of Kentucky.

Now, with who knows what kind of nuclear waste and killer chemicals percolating in the plant, first they told us there was “no damage”, then they said the damage was limited to the outside buildings. Who can we believe, what was really damaged, and does it impact the environment, or the creatures who live there–like US?

There’s more to this story: company and mouthpieces playing games with information released, contrary to what the company and feds say–they just accepted some Russian uranium for processing: see it here

i live 90 miles north east of this thing. i hope the damage is what they say it is

      • Marika

Yeah, me too, bro. I’m just south of Lexington, and that crap makes me nervous.

    • shock an awe

would we be told the truth if there was serious damage , that is the question that needs to be answered.

      • really

        No.

    • angel.bethany

People who live nearby should be shouting from the rooftops!

    • Curlysue

and all critical safety systems continued to function as intended. ??????????? WTF

      • muckracker1

for anyone with brains, there are too many wtf’s here

    • Due Diligence

      what video???

    • DOOMSDAY!

SO ANOTHER FUKUSHIMA IN THE USA? :???:

    • gsummit

I don’t see anything but guess work here. I live in the south and many times a tornado does no damage as for as human life is concerned. Often they don’t even touch down. They’ll destroy one home only to leave the next in perfect condition. Saying that there must be damage is not a fact, just a supposition. Of course tornadoes are very dangerous and should be treated as such but the officials may not be hiding anything in this instance.

      • muckracker1

1 Plant officials indicated a tornado may have touched down within the plant perimeter causing damage to some of the plant’s facilities
2.Most of the damage was confined to the exteriors of plant structures. No production systems were affected and all critical safety systems continued to function as intended.
        3. It does not say ALL of the damage, but MOST of the damage
        4. Therefore, my question is: where was the REST of the damage? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

whats wit da “all safety systems worked as what? if no damage why would safety sys. be on” ma be missing somthingggggggggggg.

    • RAINSCRYPT

muckracker1.. never stop asking questions. guess work? hardly, as reading the information you provided in your links give a seriously valid reason for concern.. the real kicker:

“as i project out in time, my certainty that the public will be protected drops significantly.”

that, from ed winner, “who coordinates the cleanup of the paducah gaseous diffusion plant for the kentucky division of waste management” 2/11 – as reported in the courier journal.

a cleanup plagued with problems? everyone can be assured that there is indeed a lot of WTF’s here..
and if ever there was legitimate cause for concern as is raised here in this article, this is definitely one.

    • gsummit

Extrapolation is a valid scientific exercise. This can point in the proper direction of the inquiry. This being said, the next number of a sequence, 1,2,3 does not have to be 4. That does not mean that something is being hidden or not, maybe the right questions have not been asked.

      • muckracker1

Thanjs gsummit: we often take a spokesperson’s word, without critically evaluating what they are saying. This”something was damaged”–what was the something. specifically what kind of damage are we talking about. Asking the right questions and refusing to be blown off is the mark of a professional journalist. and people shout be shouting from the rooftops demanding answers.

        • gsummit

I want people jailed and/or executed for hiding things from the public. That is why I want to be precise in the language and the process we use to determine their guilt. I wouldn’t be a good journalist because any verdict that I thought was just would have severe ramifications and I would always be thinking that I had not asked enough questions. I don’t want to accuse anyone unjustly.

      • RAINSCRYPT

gsummit..yes, through extrapolation, i believe the right question has been asked, but i’m not sure which “right questions” you might be referring to.
there is a history of events concerning the plant itself and the reporting of those events. much more than meets the eye here.
i would guess that muckracker1 is well aware of all that and a knowledge of circumstances surrounding this facility would easily lead someone to question what isn’t being said. if you would like to learn a little more about the paducah plant, here’s a series of videos that provide some very interesting information:

        http://wn.com/paducah_gaseous_diffusion_plant

it was the very question, what are they hiding, that lead me to looking into any possibilities….

still, i agree that one cannot readily assume something is being hidden, but asking the question is a right thing to do.

        • gsummit

I’m not referring to any particular question and I’m not saying nothing happened, but I do want to hear all of the actual facts before making a decision. If something is being hidden I want to know it even though I live several hundred miles from that location. I don’t need this information for my benefit because the general wind patterns would not be of concern to me, but because the people in that area have a right to know. I’ve been taught by several ex-wives not to assume anything, favorable or unfavorable. I’ve also been taught not to give the benefit of the doubt when the facts dictate otherwise. I’m not criticizing for asking questions but after asking those questions, if nothing is being hidden, tell us that also.

        • RAINSCRYPT

gsummit.. “if nothing is being hidden, tell us that also.” i take the meaning of that as, if nothing pans out, say so. heh.. i totally agree. all too often we see dubious or merely controversial stories make their mark, then fade away.. without correction. ever.
.. and referencing correct approaches to a story is a point well made… goes along with, never stop asking questions..
i see that both of us hold a firm belief in asking questions and verifying what is presented as conjecture. as everyone should. my thanks to muckracker1 for initiating that in this article.. and thanks to you for points well made.

After reading through the responses …. I have a question, it seems none of you are going to ask ..

Why don’t they sell of give dosimeters or radiation equipment to people living around these kinds of places?

I live within 100 mi of Hanford …which is the same kind of facility…holding, disposal, cleanup. Not an active site but a very active place.

If you had your own equipment…maybe the fear and hidden information would not be as scary.

      • muckracker1

I knew if I waited long enough somebody would come up with the answer. this way, people would have an objective measure, instead of the bull droppings of flacks and mouthpieces

Get a grip people! These facilities were designed to withstand more than you think or know. Since they have been built there has been no deaths. By eating “one” banana, you receive more isotopes than you do by drinking all the water leaking from Three Mile Island in a day. Do your research people and quit freaking out. My best friend is a nuclear engineer and says there is no danger. There are places in the world where radiation is normal, such as beaches in Brazil that read higher than Chernobyl and are safe. You’re in more danger by taking a jet liner which hits you with 20,000 times the radiation than you would receive from ground level. I suggest you people watch the documentary called “Pandora’s Promise,” which was released recently if you want the truth on just how safe radiation is. Peace! BTW… there were no 1,000,000 deaths from Chernobyl. The death count, if I read correctly was no higher than 56. Residents have already moved back in to their homes and are not getting sick. You have to understand what radiation is before freaking out. You receive it every day… from the Sun.

      • RAINSCRYPT

DeviantDavey.. i have to wonder what comment column you read where people are freaking out or, for that matter, are holding a singular concern over radiation leaking from this plant when there is so much more than that driving the issues presented here. “do your research..”?? maybe instead, you try comprehending what has actually been said here.. read the articles linked by muckracker1 and along with that, give this a look:

        http://wn.com/paducah_gaseous_diffusion_plant

“there is no danger”. hah! there is and has been.

    • Anonymax

If a tennis ball hits a window, but the window does not break: Where is the damage?

Well who lives in the area? If near by go there and take video footage for your own info. I would if it was near me. I have in the past and do go to areas near me if at all possible to confirm data for myself.
I am way up in Canada and I wont deal with the customs officials if you pay me lately. I do not need to be groped just so I can go shopping in the states, besides the shopping is not much to crow about the last 5 years at all.
If anyone is able to visit the site and then do an in depth article of what they see, is there visible damage, is there people running around like chickens with their heads cut off? Is anyone wearing special gear, if they have a geiger then we could see the actual numbers, tho it is a small portion of what can and is dangerous.

    • Kwisatz Haderach

haa, love it. tornado + nuclear plant must automatically = fukushima usa to you guys. there must be a cover up right? cover up to include any surrounding people with their own rad meter huh? no way someone would post spiking radiation levels. i swear you all want bad stuff to happen. freaks.

      • muckracker1

No, tornado plus nuclear plant DOES NOT equal Fukushima. Tornado plus avowed damage by facility managers with out specifying what the damage was, does make one ask more questions and demand answers.

        • Kwisatz Haderach

Yeah, because any damage in any way must result in a core melt down right? Let’s all look for new things to panic about. News for you bro, there are lots and lots and lots of things that can get damaged at a power plant without necessarily creating a leak or melt down scenario. I guess it’s more fun to insist there MUST be some kind of radiation release and there MUST be a cover up. Obviously if rad levels spike in the area, you wont need officials to tell you about it, plenty of meters in civilian hands. Not as fun to be level headed, I know.

        • RAINSCRYPT

core meltdown? news for YOU, “bro”. this isn’t a nuclear power plant. obviously just one of multitude of facts that has somehow escaped that inflated head of yours.

        • Kwisatz Haderach

Point taken. And yet at the same time, not really the point is it?

        • RAINSCRYPT

kwisatz.. ok.. let me say this: this is the paducah gaseous diffusion plant. there is a long nasty history associated with it, including cover up, and it’s decades long effects upon the environment and the people, due to operating procedure as well as it’s corporate/government collusion placing profit above public safety.

there really is every reason to be asking a lot of questions.

        • Kwisatz Haderach

warpaint… I get what you are saying. This facility has a history. Got it. Where are the alarm bells from independent rad samples? None? Maybe they are being silenced? Forgive me for coming off as doubtful, but there seems to be no shortage of people who seem to want something to be wrong in everything that happens. Maybe this facility is suspect in general, but if there was a serious problem, would we really be at the mercy of plant officials for information? Wouldnt it be more evident if something was as wrong as your tone suggests? Just looking a the obvious here. Again, I realize it’s not as much fun as whipping up a panic about what “could be”…

        • RAINSCRYPT

Kwisatz.. good to hear from you. believe me, i am a champion of doubt, heh, to the point of being labeled troll and much more.. the reality being that i question all things and i do not usually grant acceptance of assertions made without verification. so, i see where you are coming from.
first, i should make clear that you and i are addressing different issues here. yours seems to concern fearmongering in an article that appears speculative at best without proof, and centers on radiation leaking. my interest is the likelihood of this article being correct, and my concern includes toxic chemical contamination of the land, water, and people.. all of which exists and is documented.
second, i can provide for you an example of why i feel there is something to the question, “what are they hiding”.
according to a report issued by the nuclear regulatory commission, january 18, 2013, there were three incidents involving the release (LEAKS) of uranium hexafluoride occurring on dec. 22, 23, and 29 of 2013.. this was not reported by the plant to the NRC until january 17, 2013. there was minor exposure and, this went unreported for several weeks. unreported.
this did not occur in the distant past. it was this year.
i can provide full documentation on this. but, the point is that, yes, i have reason for concern.

        • RAINSCRYPT

heh, sorry, should read dec. 22, 23, 29..of 2012, not 2013. my mistake. the date of the NRC report is accurate though.

    • Mirabolin

What is NSFW about any of this? A (maybe) blown over road sign?

If you begin to see smoke rising, it’s time to get up wind and out of town as you’ll likely NOT be able to depend on governing systems.

    • RAINSCRYPT

wow.. video and pictures now.. all day long i didn’t know what that was about because it wasn’t available here, at least, not from what i could see here. and now, all i can say is, great follow up article!
      kind of stunned right now..

Everyone in the Vicinity of a Nuke Plant should purchase a Geiger Counter and or put it on Line using the Software the Manufacturer provides.
We have only Hydro Power here where we live but I still have a Geiger Counter on Line as Air currents from Fukushima distribute this Radiation worldwide.
      http://www.blackcatsystems.com/RadMap/map.html
Just checked the Site and the Map seems to be defunct, WTF?
Maybe someone wants to prevent the info to be made public ?

    • CrowPie

I happen to personally know ( 30 years brother in law ) one of the big wigs over that location. He is one of the most “self concerned” individuals on the planet.

He is still in the building.

I’m not worried one bit.

      • RAINSCRYPT

??? you have an insider at the facility in paducah? .. and he’s a “big wig”?.. anything to share here?

        • CrowPie

I just told you. He is THE MOST self concerned person on the planet. If something was wrong there…he would have flown the whole family to Australia.

He is still at work in the building there

          so I’m not worried.

        • RAINSCRYPT

“i just told you”.. no you haven’t. my concern is the operational status of the facility and what role he plays there, in what capacity. is the plant processing uranium now or not? over the past two years that facility was supposed to be shut down and going through a cleanup. the real question is what has been going on there?
was he with union carbide? how long has he served there.. what does he know about all of the cover ups. on and on..

        • CrowPie

          @ war paint.

Let me rephrase. My brother in law is a very anal retentive man. That is a very good trait to have in his “very high ranking” position.

“Most” workers there answer to him. He has Opened and Closed many “places” like this one, “without incident.”

Pacducah…is in very capable hands….”now that my brother in law has entered the picture.”

Please rest easy. He is a highly capable and moral man with everyones safety in mind.

        • RAINSCRYPT

good to know and thanks for the reassuring comment. seems the cleanup is going well as i see in a recent report. the dept. of energy has removed approximately 2,600 gallons of trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater…

          that’s encouraging.

      • Kwisatz Haderach

This just cant be true CrowPie…. there was a tornado. And a nuclear facility. There simply must be radiation leakage. And a cover up.

        • CrowPie

I Know…..It just can’t be possible. My goodness…whatever shall we do?

I had to stop this guy before I vomited on my computer. What a holier-than-thou blowhard.

If you live near Paducah your life has already been shortened. The ground water is poisoned and the workers have long been dying of cancer. The process plutonium and DU.
