Coast Guard Abandons Hope For Missing Ship Crewmen! Coastguard Suspends Search For 33 Crewmen [Picture, Video]

The US CoastGuard has formally called of the search for a misssing cargo ship and itss 33 crew members.

According to the Coast Guard:

Crews have searched a total of 172,257 square nautical miles while searching in the vicinity of the ship’s last known position 35 nautical miles northeast of Crooked Islands, Bahamas.

The Coast Guard located a deceased person in a survival suit in the water Sunday.

A heavily damaged life boat with markings consistent with those on board the El Faro was also located Sunday. Additional items located by Coast Guard aircrews within search areas include a partially submerged life raft, life jackets, life rings, cargo containers and an oil sheen Sunday.

The US Coast Guard has “suspended” its search for the El Faro, which sank near the Bahamas with 33 people on board.

The 735ft (224m) cargo vessel and its crew have been missing since issuing a distress call on Thursday.

Search planes have found debris including life jackets, containers and oil in the water, but only one body has been recovered.

It is not clear why the captain decided to lead the ship into waters near Hurricane Joaquin.

“We were very saddened to learn that no survivors have been found,” said Bella Dinh-Zarr, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The search will be officially suspended on Wednesday evening at sunset.

“They did all they could in this search effort … our crews and aircrafts flew repeatedly into that storm,” Coast Guard Captain Mark Fedor said on Wednesday.  Source  video
