Neil Diamond has been one of my favorites since the mid-Sixties. His are the only songs I’ve ever sung karaoke from. When my aunt (also Jewish) wanted to see The Jazz Singer (it had just come to cinemas), I went with her. I went for Diamond, his songs, and the movie; she went because Omar Sharif was in the movie…haha. A n y w a y… I loved the movie, she hated it (sorry, no spoiler alerts why), but of the songs that touched me in that movie, America made tears come to my eyes. That was over forty years ago. I’ve heard the song dozens if not hundreds of times since (of course, I bought the cassette and played it to destruction) and even now, during Dan’s Musical Spotlight show, it still tears me up and chokes off singing along. My parents were the first generation born in the States and I’m every minute grateful they turned their backs to their ancestral homes to make the journey here just before the turn of the 20th Century. It’s why I’m America First, MAGA, Patriot party, what have you. It’s not about me. It’s not about you. We’ll come and go. It’s about the beacon on the hill. It’s about knocking off the chains. It’s about what America stands for. And I’ll *always* stand by her.
