University of Maryland professor named 2024 IFT Fellow

Catherine (Chengchu) Liu, PhD, a distinguished figure in the field of food science and a tenured professor at the University of Maryland, has been recognized as a 2024 IFT Fellow by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). This honor is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional career achievements and contributions to the science of food profession.

Dr. Liu’s journey to becoming an IFT Fellow is filled with academic and professional accomplishments. With a career spanning roles at esteemed institutions such as the FDA’s Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory, Oregon State University and Shanghai University, she has made significant impacts in the realm of food science. At the University of Maryland, she leads the Maryland Sea Grant Technology Extension Program, where she imparts her knowledge to students and professionals from around the globe.

The recognition as an IFT Fellow underscores Liu’s commitment to excellence and leadership in the field of food science. Her selection among the 2024 class of IFT Fellows recognizes her service to the Institute of Food Technologists and her pivotal contributions to advancing food science.

In addition to her academic endeavors, Liu’s professional journey is characterized by numerous achievements. She holds five patents, has edited/co-edited nine books, co-authored 26 book chapters, and published 88 peer-reviewed articles. Liu’s influence extends beyond academia, as she has been actively involved in various professional organizations and advisory committees.

Liu expressed her gratitude upon receiving this esteemed recognition, stating, “I am truly honored and humbled to have been selected as part of the elite group of IFT Fellows.”

The celebration of the 2024 IFT Fellows will take place at the Fellows Recognition Forum during the IFT FIRST: Annual Event and Expo, scheduled from July 14-17, 2024, in Chicago, IL. This year, only 10 individuals out of more than 11,000 IFT members have been given the prestigious title of IFT Fellow.
