Mungos, the banded mongoose, enters the LRT
Curious about
the primate-like postorbital bar of the meerkat, Suricata (Fig 1), the addition of a traditionally closely related taxon, Mungos, the banded mongoose (Fig 1), helped clarify rising phylogenetic issues.
Primates and mongooses are both basal placentals in the LRT.

Low-set ears on the meerkat,
made it look even more primate-like. Most carnivorans, like cats, bears and dogs, have higher-set ears.
This mongoose tunnels, so smaller, lower ears evolved to accommodate this activity. This trait also appears to converge with higher primates. like apes, but for different reasons. No apes tunnel, other than humans over the past 4000 years.
… not counting cave dwelling, of course.

Mungos mungo
(Gmelin 1788, 30–45cm length) is the extant banded mongoose with long strong claws used for digging in soil.

On another housekeppiing note:
Schowalteria and Plesiorycteropus madagascariensis are known from incomplete skulls. With fewer data points to score, scrappy taxa tend to reduce resolution = add more MPTs. So these taxa leave the data matrix, but remain on the LRT in dark red next to a more completely known taxon, to set it apart, but not too far apart. This is regrettablen but necessary after earlier testing.
